Tomato plants are working overtime, I have plants so big now I have to get a ladder to reach the top and more tomatoes than I can eat. Looks like most of my neighbors are going to get some. Found a better use for my old pickets I have a neighbor that kills my outdoor cats so I'm going to add 18" to my 6' fence. Good fence makes good neighbors.:rocketwho

Wait, a neighbor that KILLS your family pets??!!!

I'd be calling the police and Animal Control. And that would be after I took a very strong chill pill because my default feeling would be to punch the guy out....repeatedly!

Been there, done that. Police said they can't do anything without proof, as in security camera. I tried to tell my neighbor the cats keep down mice rats snakes geckos, moles, run off Raccoons and possums. His response was he didn't have anything like that in his yard!:rolleyes2. At this point I called him stupid because the reason he doesn't have these vermin is because of the cats. Half of our cats have disappeared but now we have moles. These cats are wild and live outside but Mrs. Cat has taken a shine to them. The hard part is not stooping to his level. I'm 64, a VNV, been a bouncer and lived in Dallas doing Apt. Mant. for 15 years, battled a 17yo in Dallas that came out of Calf. Bloods, Hes in prison now for 1st degree murder. Since I have been out of the Military I have looked down the wrong end of a gun 4 times. If I tear into somebody I'm afraid I am going to hurt someone. I have seen to much violence. All I am saying is give peace a chance. John Lennon, God help me I won't snap. Got 16' of fence done today, doesn't sound like much but I have to cut the pickets and each section of the fence is a different level which makes it a challenge. If he can't see me and I can't see him and the cats won't bother to jump the fence I'm happy. Fence is now 9'+ and all made with scrap fence that was being thrown out.👍 I'll post some pics when I get closer to finished. Mike

Well best of luck, Mike. I'm a pacifist, I really am but that would come to a screeching halt if someone killed my pet.

I hope this works out well for you in that you do NOT end up incarcerated!

Dan, I'm the same way I believe in live and let live. Mrs. Cat wouldn't hurt a fly, literally she catches the ones that get in the house and puts them outside. Unfortunately we might have a small racist problem, not on my side. He is a young angry black man and his wife pushes his buttons. I'm a 64 yo white man. He thinks he can push around using the race card. He also has a substance abuse problem, booze and weed and a "ex cocaine"problem. He has admitted this to me. All I can do is inform him of my past and warn him I will protect my family and property. I have invested in a solar spot light that has a bright red light that blinks at night, I put that one in the front drive and plan to get one for the back yard. The one in front keeps him from partying in his front drive, in front of the children. Maybe if I put one pointed to his back deck he will get paranoid and move.

So here's a update on the neighbor, 1st pic I'm taking the pickets I salvaged and adding to the top of the fence, he's tall but not that tall. I have enough I can go down the side. I like it because the weathered pickets match the fence. 2nd pic I got the windows in the greenhouse popped in, last wall will be solid and house the A/C and workbench with sink. 3rd pic Bees must be working overtime, I counted 100+ tomatoes. 4th pic got a little Jalapeno with 4 little peppers. I think they might be hot. We are going to get a cold spell here in Memphis tomorrow night, its suppose to get down in the lower 50s, hope the mators make it. Mike

I'm a old carpenter and I know this is not the proper way to build a building but sometimes you have to use what ya got. The same neighbor that I got the windows from replaced two sections of fence and a gate, I'm cutting them up and using them for siding. Going for that barn wood look. In the spirit of the build cost for material $0.00. If nothing else it looks like a construction site. 🔨🪜🪛🪚(y)

Interesting build out. Just started reading the thread. As for the cat problem. Don't let the jerk neighbor push you into doing something, you will regret. Unfortunately, in many jurisdictions, if those cats are on his property, he may have the right to deal with them as he sees fit, as long as its not seen as abuse. For example, I work in WV and I am told by several of my coworkers (even the women hunt here) that it is commonly known that if a neighbors dogs are caught "running" deer on your property (it is customary) for the dog to be shot on sight with no repercussions...my response was WTF? Most dogs cant help themselves and chase deer. So legally, its probably best to try to keep your cats in your yard.

We understand, the cats are ferrel and only lately has Mrs. Cat been able to get close enough to pet some. He says they keep shitting in his yard and killing the grass, I have tried to explain to my "Good Neighbor" these cats kill rats, mice, moles, snakes, bugs, the list goes on and they don't kill the grass. Lately we have had a mole problem and our little friends have been taking care of them for us. Our houses back up to a 10 acre field, he has told me he doesn't have a problem with those vermin. No pill for stupid. When I told him thats because of the cats he just couldn't believe that. We have noticed that one of the oldest stray females has taken up with someone else she looks like she has been fixed, she still a outside cat and comes around now and then. Mrs. Neighbor came over and knocked on my door and ask if she needed to know anything, why did I make the fence higher and why did we have a security camera pointed at her back yard. They party (smoke weed and who knows what) and drink, I think she's paranoid, I told her it was to keep the cats from jumping the fence and she needs to ask her husband why half of the cats are gone now. I told her I didn't want to talk to her and go away. I repeat there is no pill for stupid. 1 - If I was going to record anything in her backyard why would I make the fence higher? 2 - Its not a security camera its a solar spotlight to keep the raccoons and possums away, its motion activated and when it goes off it has a red light that blinks for a few seconds. Yes it looks like a SC but I'm not going to tell them that. This ***** bought corn stalks and set them on chairs to block what he thought was a camera. I guess he thought they would stay up forever. His latest DA move was he dug up a vine that had grown on his side of the fence but the root was on my side, he dug under the fence to get to the root, OK I'm alright with that only he didn't fill in the hole he dug, I know he's doing it thinking it's ******* me off but its not. I noticed raccoon tracks going under the fence.😎 Thats whats been shitting in his yard.

Just to help you out a little during you current build, Russ Morash the producer of This Old House and it’s spin-offs hired Norm Abrahams on the first Old House project since he built a shed at Russ Morash’s house and only had 3 short pieces of wood left over. Or so the story is
Told. So Yankee thriftiness could be Memphis thriftiness?
Nothing wrong with recycling. Just takes a little more time and imagination to put it all together.

Another Norm fan here!
I got to meet him many years ago when he was at a grand opening of an Ace Hardware store.
20211111_155931.jpg
He autographed this saw blade for me, after making sure it was a Vermont American, since they were sponsors of TOH at the time.

I also heard the story of how he got the TOH job.
A slightly different version, but the limited amount of scrap was the key.

Found another stash of fence sections- 9 and a gate, 16' of 4x4. this is a major score, it should be enough to do the siding inside and out. I'll post a pic 11/15 😎 (y). Enough 4x4 to do the legs on my shelves.

44' of seasoned cedar fence, it should be enough to side the inside and out. All screwed not nailed. 😎 (y) Free wood, love it.

Pickup truck earning its keep again!

just watch out for nails and other used fasteners.
Little Ranger has over 250000 miles, I'm on the second motor. This fence was a sad case of a DYI gone bad. All pickets put on with screws. gotta cordless but a lot of screws. Some screws put in knots! Three rails and bottom rail was. laid on the ground with the pickets buried about 3". They didn't even use outdoor screws so wood has a few streaks. I just call it weathered wood, can't buy that. Mike

Isn’t that called distressed wood in the high end designer circles?

Discuss the characteristics of the patterns as you drink your white or red wine in goblets in elite company.
Mrs. Cat called it distressed wood when I told her I had some free wood, then I realized we were talking about two different things . We prefer to "snob" the upper class wannabes, I make my own shine and Mrs. Cat likes to recycle and fill her Pierre empties with wine straight from the box. Then we sit out in the Man Cave catio and talk about the important issues like how thankful we are not to have to take care of a cement pond, gun control, how Elon Musk should shut up so Tesla stock will go back up, should I dig a root cellar and put a safe in it to keep all our bitcoins in or just put them under the mattress and inflation - the price of corn, sugar, Mason jars prices and yeast.:drink:Then we laugh, laugh, laugh and watch the price of the Rivian stock that I just bought for $111 a share go up. 😎 👍

Just as I expected, a down to earth kind of family.
Mrs. Cat and I have lived a humble life, she was a elementary school Bookie, Katalogger, Lyberrion, Librarian and I have always been in some sort of maint., tools, carpenter. Never really wanted to be rich just comfortable and keep a sense of humor. Now we are both retired, she subs PT and I pick up odd jobs. Strange thing is I make more doing odd jobs and SS than I did working for corp. Did a tour 76-80 USAF.

Nice to see the repurposing of wood. I'm a huge fan of this. Many cedar fences can be modified to save the existing panels, yet so many get demolished. On another note (rant). Years ago our city changed RS1 zoning rules to allow more height, another floor. Many, many older homes built with our old growth forests instantly became bulldozer bait, smashed to matchsticks and this continues. Good luck trying to build an 18-20 foot span with something out of a sawmill today. I applaud your ethics sir.

Worked on the front top plate and window framing. Doesn't look like much but there is a couple of hours of work to get it right. Wall has to be level, plumb, and straight. Compare with the previous photo to get a good idea of the difference.IMG_1539.jpg

Got a break in the weather so I jumped on the greenhouse back wall, got my moisture barrier, nailing blocks and picket siding. Started on the trim and it got chilly and I got tired of walking in the mud. I like how it came out, I'll cut out for the AC in the spring.IMG_1541.jpgIMG_1540.jpgIMG_1542.jpg

Mike, I shouldn't like your greenhouse as much as I do but that probably reflects my aversion to Condo and Home Owner Associations: "Your pallet palette is not on the approved list of colors. The Association's legal representative will contact you shortly to discuss the penalty."

Bob the HOA has sent me notice and Mrs Cat and I have decided to paint the greenhouse and fence "CAMO", they can't ***** if they can't see it.

Plant a rusty old tractor in the front lawn and see how that goes.
I have a rusty Chevy Astro Van there now, haven't tagged it since 2019, I'm just waiting on them;) Trying to get the garage cleaned up so I can work on it, it need brakes, everything. But the engine only has 105k miles on it, other than the brakes its all good. I picked it up at a police auction for $400.

Isn’t the Astro van your storage shed until the greenhouse is finished?

Friend was building a new and bigger shed and the town said he could only have one shed. Told them he had to finish the new one so he could put the contents inside before the old one came down.

You know me to well! It is acting like a storage just because I'm to lazy to tote my tools back to the man cave, BUT plans are to replace the brake system on the van, even though the Ranger PU has served me well it does have issues. Van has v-6, PU has a 4 banger which I'm on the 2nd motor now and this engine is on its last leg. I bought the van on a gov. auction site, they said it didn't run, when I got to it it had kicked the alt. belt and ran the bat. down. I think it was in a hurricane flood and water came up to the floor pan. Mexicans bought it and started to transport drugs with it. When they got caught they had gone from Houston to Nashville with NO brakes. I haven't tore into it yet but would like to replace everything from brake lines to pads. It does run great and no smoke, thats a plus. If the PU went **** up, it would be cheaper to fix the van than buy a new truck. Last time I replace the motor I had to buy a used motor because you couldn't but a rebuild kit for the 2300, cheaper to throw it away. I do like the van because it has no rear and side door windows. More secure that way. Hopefully the law won't think I'm transporting drugs! As far as the greenhouse goes it is really a greenhouse, if worse came to worse I could call it a covered deck.

If you had windows in the van you wouldn't need a greenhouse. I'm growing some fine greenery in my obligatory rusty Chevy. Anybody asks, I tell them it's a biology experiment.

I'm real happy with my little van, I do handyman/maint./build work and the van use to be a service van. it has a wall behind the seats that I can lock up tools. With all the "God fearing people in the world" hopefully I can keep them honest. If they can't see my tools maybe they won't be tempted to break the commandment, thou shall not steal.

No respectable greenhouse would be complete without a workbench, doing it on the cheap is a art. So far I have $21 in this one, $4.50 twice for 2x4s and .25x4 for tiles. The rest was recycled. 👍 Still not finished, I'll add shelves and I have a couple of cabinet doors for the left side and a 20gl. tote I'm going to use for the drain under the sink, the tote cost me $11 it was a Lowes Black Friday deal, I also need to "Steam Punk"some type of faucet, that bathroom fixture got to go. Mrs Cat just slapped me down and reminded me I'm not building the Taj Mahal.IMG_1549.jpg

Mike, I completely understand the Taj comment but you know that faucet is almost useless for watering a potted plant in that sink. Wayfair currently has this 4" spread laundry faucet on sale for $35.69:

Just powered through the whole thread on a quiet Saturday morning, nice work over the last few years making some great spaces with materials that would otherwise have been wasted!

I do want to caution against Wayfair, they have some pretty heinous business practices that I try not to support with any of my dollars.
