Feathering may not be the best term but basically I have noticed there are certain spots on the dial where Autoset jumps to a much higher voltage/speed with only a slight movement of the knob. The dial is only marked in whole numbers but if you picture moving from a position of say 6.9 to 7.1 a big increase results. I assume this is just the nature of the beast but it has me wondering what happens behind the scenes with Autoset.

So how does Autoset work? Is each position on the dial a discrete voltage/speed combination or does it work off of some sort of feedback from the arc and continually adjust?

My machine is a circa 2010 MM180 which is the transformer version and basically a derated MM211

Just preset values for each...Autoset is just a shortcut to reading the chart. If you're having trouble with some of the automatic settings, just adjust manually to what you actually need.

The Autoset Elite is a bit better because it lets you tweak the voltage/speed from the preset. Even then though, it's just a starting point and you need to understand your arc and materials and how things are behaving and adjust accordingly.
