Found a Miller Thunderbolt XL 300/200 AC/DC stick welder on Craigslist at the right price for me. But it seems like Miller discontinued this model and only sells a 225/150 model. Must be a reason they don't offer the 300 anymore?

Does anyone know why? Should I run away or take a good deal if it works? Would parts be a PITA to get from Miller?

Not a lot of parts to a stick welder, The primary one is the transformer, and if that dies, it's not economical to replace anyway...

There isn't alot of call for a big single phase welder anymore. Most factories or shops that are doing heavy welding have 3-phase. Most of the farm shops either have a used one or buy a mig.

I bought a miller thunderbolt on craigslist a couple of years ago. I don't know if it's the xl or not. I bought to do a few projects and has been fine. I took the cover off and cleaned and greased it and repainted here and there. There's not much to it, but miller is a good brand and have free manuals and reviews for their stuff on line, google it.

I agree, if it works just get it, assuming the price is good. Make sure you pay low enough that if it dies in a couple years you won't be upset.
