just picked up this sweet Bridgeport type mill, 900 bones. It needs some TLC.

Good find Jon, wondering what name is on this mill, HP of the motor, and what taper is it? Did you get the manual also?

Its called a "First". I got a manual and a manual on CD. The guy I bought it off was an industrial mechanic. The quill feed worm was badly damaged, which he repaired with all new parts. All new bearings throughout. I apprenticed on this very type of mill back in the early 90's. It needs some tlc. The table is only 36". Its enough to bet my small machine shop started. Im picking up a Jakobson grinder this sat.

"Bridgeport Type" means what? I've never heard of "First", Google seems to indicate Taiwanese Is that where it is imported from?

When the patents ran out on the BP mill, the markets were flooded with replicas. Chinese copies. Ive seen many different badges on these.

It's a vertical milling machine, which BP certainly popularized, but I would not call it a "Bridgeport type" on that basis alone. Cosmetically, other than being a VM, it looks nothing like a BP. :dunno:

The reason he's saying BP style is probably because on a lot of vertical mills the head can go forward and back and rotate, but on these machines it can slide forward and back, rotate, and tilt. It's similar in it's capabilities to a BP.

So by that logic, a Kia is a "Lexus type Machine" because it has 4 wheels, A/C and transports you from one point to another...

And those bench top Drill mills are "Bridgeport type machines also..

Sorry, while a BP may not be the do-all be-all best in class, machine out there, they did "set the standard" by which any VM is measured. I was asking because I have my doubts this one meets that standard. It may, or it may be even better; I don't know. I've never heard of a "First", so I couldn't say for certain.

Is it a deal? Most certainly; that thing has to be far better than any drill mill, and it was a better deal that most of those..

Sorry, I've been looking at, and occasionally using BP's all of my adult life. I don't look at the pics of that First and say "BP".

Both V. mills? Yep.

Similar in general construction? Yep.

Are they are still two different "Cars"? Yep. :dunno:

Clearly YMMV...

Actually, it'd be closer to a Datsun looking like a Jag. :p But beyond that, they have to have similar abilities. Will the First last as long? No. As high of quality materials? No. As beautiful and worth restoring? No. Make the same parts? Most likely. And it`s not often you see a BP in that kind of condition for $900. Especially not in Canada!

no question, the quality is not there but the parts are virtually interchangeable. you could buy 3 mills in the 80's for the price of one Bridgeport. I guess you would call it a nock off. The Textron Bridgeports a little different at the variable speed drive. My families machinery dealership sold both. The XLO mill was also made here in London. They used to age the castings in a large compound behind the factory.
