Millwaukee generator...how to "energize" it?

I have this old gas powered generator that the 5hp BS runs great on but I can't get any power out of it. Someone told me that it might need to be "energized". I'm not sure how to go about that. I'm not even sure where to begin troubleshooting. The breakers are not tripped and my VOM isn't showing anything when I touch directly to the brushes. I am out of my element here.

not familiar with the process but i believe the widely used term for "energizing" a generator is called "flashing the field". Throw that in google and some info should come up. Good luck.
