Milton V-Style high flow coupler issues

I have had these fitting and couplers for over a year, I do not use them all the time, but one started getting sticky and then wouldn’t release. They only offer brass couplers and the fittings are steel, of course I am using it on a needle scaler so it is beating it all the time. I am just curious to see if anyone else has run across issues with these and what they did to solve the problem.

The pictures don’t do a great job of showing the damage, but the brass flakes are everywhere and the fitting was leaking, I had to remove the fitting and coupler as a unit and put it in a vise to get it apart using a hammer. I was thinking of using a whip, but then oiling the tool would be tougher and not direct. Any ideas?

I've worn several out, they don't last nearly as long as m style. Haven't had any luck fixing them so now I just toss them, the better flow is worth the cost to me. I need to try some other good brands to see if there is really something better.

I'm yet to find a brand of coupler that will hold up to long term air hammer, needle gun, or 3/4" gun use. All the industrial brands eventually deform on the plugs or the couplers blow their guts out so we put whips on all ours.

As far as the couplers, I can’t find steel ones, the fittings are steel.

That's not a coupler, that's an air fitting/plug like he's using now.

OP I think this is what you need. Milton color fit, designed for use with their aluminum v-style fittings but should work with any v-type and is the only steel one's I could find that are "V". But the anodized part is surely aluminum.

I realized that after the fact because what's being asked doesnt make sense. The coupler doesnt matter. The balls that lock the fitting are steel not brass so the material of the coupler body doesnt matter, an all steel one would be no different.

You can reduce the wear switching from brass to steal FITTINGS but since he's already using the steel ones he really just needs to switch to a whip which eliminates the vibration causing the wear entirely.

How long a whip are you guys using?

I can’t find one made out of steel, they make some cheesy aluminum ones that have terrible reviews. I am sure the whip is the best way to overcome the issue, I just hate having to pour oil into the rubber hose.

I figured the steel balls in the coupler were eating into the brass portion, thus causing more play and in turn eating into the steel coupler. There were brass pieces everywhere and you can see the brass color on the steel fitting.

If you really want to switch just the coupler im sure there are a few options. Coilhose 5-1 would work which is all steel except for the safety collar (aluminum). You're still going to end up with wear though. I use to have this happen with my air hammer which caused the balls to rub divots into the lock ring of the fitting.

You can minimize it a bit by using swivel adapters as well.

Not if you use your hammers and needles a lot. I've seen more then a couple guys catch busted swivels in the face or fling peaces off into space.

I think Strouty has the good CP French made ones not the cheap universal block style.

After seeing the carnage that this coupler and fitting had, I won’t be trying a swivel, just a whip. I have two other needle scalers that have pistol style grips, I wonder if those would be easier on the fittings as they would be straight out the back?

The ISO specification for these plugs states that a whip hose must be used when the coupler is used with tools that vibrate.
This is no doubt because of the steel locking balls.
I designed the Stedlin coupler using 8 acetal balls to prevent damage to the plug.

Quick answer is NO
First. Milton Industries doesn't design or manufacture anything and they don't create standards.

Use a whip and be done with it. If you're worried about putting oil in a rubber hose then get a premade hydraulic hose with npt ends, probably cost you 8 bucks and outlive the tool.

We use them at work on 3/4 & 1" impacts and they typically outlast the tool, when it breaks we take the fitting & the whip and throw it on the new impact
