Standard 10/12" miter saws like this are really only meant for wood. You can get away cutting plastics, and maybe some aluminum, but it will be tougher on the saw.

What metal projects are you trying to cut?

If its steel, then you are definitely going to need either a bandsaw or 14" metal miter saw.

Search "dry cut" saw and you will find tons of info. Bandsaw would be another route.

There is a company called Evolution Tools that makes a multi cutter, there are a couple of models. Mixed reviews. Personally I would avoid them? Get a dedicated saw for each, even if its a abrasive 14" ($100) and a 12" wood miter saw ($100).

I'd think you could cut Al all day long. I have a DeWalt 12" miter that only cuts Al tube and flat bar (I never work w wood)

IME Al creates far less drag than a not-bone-dry 2x6

For ferrous, no. It's an expensive saw to trash it like this. Buy a HF beater if you're compelled to cut steel in a wood saw.
