hey guys

recently my cordless craftsman c3 1/2 impact just gave out so im in the market for another, stronger, impact wrench. ive been looking into the m18 series high torque impact 2663-20 or the m18 fuel 2762-20.

my question is, does the battery amp/hour play a big role in determining the amount of torque output? I have the opportunity of picking up a brand new 2.0 amp hour battery for half the retail along with the 2663-20 for about 40% off retail.

is there a difference between power when using the 2.0 vs the 4.0 amp battery? or does that determine battery life?

also willing to hear reviews of the two m18's in question :D

Depends on the specific battery, but capacity and max current are usually related, but double capacity is likely more like 10% more torque for the same tool.

Why not get the C3 battery rebuilt?

You can't put the 2Ah battery on the 276x gun iirc.

Also, you want the 2763 if you want to change sockets, the 2762 is designed for ironworkers putting up buildings and requires a tool to remove the socket.

Even if you modify the 2.0AH battery to fit the impact, it's going to endure quite a strain. It'll experience voltage drop and power reduction will be noticeable.

Well it's not that the battery is bad. I can hold the socket while pulling the trigger on the c3 and it'll just hammer away. So I figure it's a good chance to get something more powerful.

Thanks for the input. So in regards to 10% more torque with a 4.0 ah battery, which battery should I use if I want to achieve the specified torque?

The C3 impact has plenty of torque for many applications; I've zipped off strut bolts torqued to 116 lb-ft with ease using the 1/2" C3 impact. Which C3 battery are you using? C3 tools perform best if used with the Li-Ion batteries rather than the Ni-Cads.

I was using lithium ion batteries with it. a slim one and a regular sized one. I really have no complaints with it. ive done a number of suspension jobs with it, transmission swaps, exhaust swaps, and other little jobs but just figure i'd look into something with more torque since the opportunity has arrived.

if im gonna stay in the 200 ft/lbs range, im looking at the compact m18 1/2 impact since itll be smaller than the c3 and lighter.

Pretty much all compact batteries are a single set of cells in series, however many are needed for the voltage. You can only pull so much juice out of lithium cells, exceeding that reduces their lifespan, and can actually be dangerous. It also means more voltage drop under load, so less power out of the tool.

Likewise, almost all full size packs are pretty much a pair of compact packs wired in parallel, so you get more runtime and power (sometimes anyway) because of both capacity amd voltage drop, and a longer lifespan from lower draw per cell.

Oh really? And yes it works, though I don't know if torque is reduced.

Then by all means get the M18 impact with the largest battery available.
