First World Problem, so skip if you wish.

I bought the red case bit set a while ago, but only recently dig into them. What a PITA they are to tilt out, in order to remove the bits. Am I missing something?

I have the same case, for their impact bits, and it’s much easier, perhaps because the case is more space inside, IDK. The standard bit case is crowded.

anyway, before I gift this case away, is there anything that sets these bits above others or that might make the case easier to deal with?

If you have a newer set with silver bits they are quite good. They fit screws well and are durable. If you have an older set and the bits are black then no they are actually pretty terrible. The newer case I have with silver bits is better but the bit holder that flips out is still quite stiff. I do what leflesshadetree does and leave them flipped out a bit.

I think PBSwiss makes one of the nicest cases. I don't think they're available in the US unless you buy the bit set, which can get pricy since everything is made in Switzerland.

Montana brand is another brand that comes to mind. Their bits are USA made, but I'm not 100% sure about the case. I don't have much experience with their products; they have been on my radar though. The locking mechanism that secures the bits is not built into the part you slide the bit into. It only locks in place when you fold the bit rail flat, and when the bit rail is lifted into the upright position, it unlocks the bits from the retention mechanism.

Here is a clip of showing how Montana does their bit retention. Best in the market, in my opinion. Starts at about 1:25 into the video

Recently bought a Mil W set of drills (work great btw) but they're sorta 'iffy' to remove from the case (until I learned to 'flip' them up anyway). And the case has an odd (to me) sliding latch. But hey, they work well, so I'm OK with them. Meanwhile, the older I get the more 'complicated' simple things seem to be for me.

The bit cases are ok, I preferred the DeWalt ones I had before these. The worst are the drill bits, I often grab my leatherman to avoid getting cut pulling a bit out of the holders.
