Milwaukee freaks... a question about sub compact M12 stuff

I should be up on this stuff but I’m not... at all. In fact, I have zero brand loyalty when it comes to modern cordless stuff. It’s just that I already have both m12 and m18 tools and batteries, so I might as well stick with it.

Anyway, I want a small drill/driver combo reserved for wood working and figured the m12s were the way to go. I went to buy a set and noticed there were three or four different versions. Which set do you Milwaukee guys suggest I go with?

My only goals are to use my current m12 batteries and I really want something small.

I have no experience with it, but it sounds like the Fuel screwdriver might be the ticket! 2402...

When you say drill driver combo, are you looking for a single tool or a drill with a clutch and separate impact driver? Went through the same deal before only with Bosch's 12V platform as the batteries can be very easily modified to interchange between Dremel's 12V platform which I'm already married to. Ended up choosing a set with two dedicated tools, soft case, two batteries & charger for $100. Milwaukee, Makita & DeWalt all run similar deals on occasion. IMHO, anything kept away from grease & oil in a woodworking environment (my wheelhouse) has a better chance of lasting a while provided you don't chuck up a 3" hole saw to cut through Ipe.

Today the recommendation would be the M12 Surge and Fuel Hammer Drill kit.

Unfortunately Milwaukee non-hammer drills will end up costing you more as they are not usually in the combo kits which get all the good promotions.

You seem to be missing the point, I do not want the hammer drill/impact combo kit, I want a drill/impact combo kit. I was asking Ryan how he liked the ONE he purchased. The kit he purchased DID NOT HAVE A HAMMER DRILL!

Yes I understand that, he got the M12 Gen2 Fuel drill and driver, and his specific request was around wood working. Today the answer is the M12 Surge which is better than the driver he got and Fuel drill. They do not make a Surge & Drill combo kit, only the Surge & Hammer Drill kit. So for the answer with the latest models you would have to buy them separately at a greater cost which is what I was trying to explain.

In the Gen2 M12 Fuel there is no longer a size difference between the drill and hammer drill. I understand you dont want the hammer function, but you would have to spend more $ to get the plain drill instead.

Just get a M12 hex fuel impact. There's no sense in getting something less powerful.

Thats new multi head m12 thing should be out soon if its not on pre order already.

The point being made up above is also the hammer function being available on the drill does not need to be used if thats not obvious. So if you can find a better deal in a kit with the higher model drill, whats the difference if a deal comes up where you don’t PAY for the extra capability? Just dont use the hammer function.

Correct the hammer drill can b e used and just a regular drill witch is what I do I have the m18 hammer drill along with the m12 fuel sds plus hammer drill so the normal m12 fuel hammer drill is pointless to me but it's was cheaper. Now on the impact the surge is not better per say. Now sure it's better as far as sound being quieter but due to the hydraulic action it's also less power then the normal m12 impact. So if you would rather have a quitter impact and wiling to give up some power the. Get the surge. But if you want the power and the noise doesn't bother you the. Get the non surge but the gen 2 fuel impact. Now the new multi head drill/driver is not an impact it's just a drill driver with different chucks and used with either a 1/4 hex bit or use the keyless chuck with any bit. I have the m12 gen 2 non surge fuel impact, m18 fuel gen 3 impact, the m12 gen 2 hammer drill, m18 fuel gen 2 hammer drill, m18 fuel gen2 impact and they all get used and have their place but I will also be ordering the new multi head drill driver too. Surge is nice if the noise is an issue but 99% of the time it's not an issue and I would rather have the power. But I'm sure on day if the deal is right I will buy a surge to have when the 1% of the time arises. But either way they all are good and you can't really go wrong with any of the fuel model drills and or impacts.

The hammer drill is a tougher higher quality tool, just get it even if you don't think you'll need it, and you just might after all.

As stated, the hammer drill can be used as a regular drill...just don't turn on the hammer setting and it's a plain drill.

I recently picked up an m12 hammer drill off eBay for about $60 brand new to replace my aging dewalt drill. Haven't used it much but so far I'm happy with it.

I have had Makita, Bosch, Dewalt and Milwaukee cordless stuff.........now days once you commit to battery battery eco system for the the brand........it’s very hard to switch. Few years back committed to M12 M18 can’t see ever changing just on the economics alone.
