If Fuel a tool technology, a battery technology, or what? Are batteries from a Fuel tool interchangeable with the regular M18 stuff?

Brushless motors. Generally that means a little more power and batter life. The batteries are interchangeable with other tools in the series, M18 for example.

That's pretty much it.

The brushless motor also has electronic overload protection. So the drill can shut down the motor if you get a bit stuck. It makes a funny click, and doesn't torque your arm off.
Brushless is also less affected by water or dirt, as it has no brushes to mess up.
