Have a 18 volt fuel string trimmer and am wanting to do pm on the head gearcase. The lube Milwaukee wants me to use is type y and 6oz from them is likw $20.I was wondering what other grease would be correct and more reasonable.I was thinking maybe john deere corn head grease may work but unsure.What is type y grease?

I have a couple Stihl trimmers and have always used the Stihl grease. Don't see why it wouldn't be ok. Seems like a tube was about $8 or so

The Stihl grease is excellent I would use that, if it is good enough for Stihl I am sure it will work for the gearbox in your Milwaukee. Any dealer should have it in stock

I like mine, but learned a long time ago not to recommend something in this day and age quality various so much from 1 item to the next . One thing to keep in mind the speed is not as fast as most 2 stroke weedeaters but its okay you don't have to pull the rope.
Lubricants supplied by tool manufacturers are usually very overpriced and they are seldom anything special. I have a Red Max string trimmer. They are high end and used by many landscapers. I dug out my owners manual to refresh my memory and see what they called for. Happily, they do not call for some RedMax grease at a gazillion dollars a tube.. They say to use a multi purpose lithium base grease. I am assuming there is a grease fitting on your Milwaukee so you will want a grease cartridge. I did a quick search and Valvoline Cerulean seems to fill the bill. It is carried by Auto Zone and Advance so it should be easy to come by and it is a quarter of the price of the Milwaukee stuff. Many of the auto greases are lithium based. If you work on your car, you might even have some on hand.
