Milwaukee grips gripes?

I have a Milwaukee drill/impact set that I use daily. The rubber handle has sloughed off the impact driver, I assume because I use it so often with hands covered in mineral oils (mostly synthetic suspension oil).

Has anyone else had this happen? I called Milwaukee and they said they had never heard of this, and that I had to take it to a service centre, which is at least an hour away. I feel like I’m sort of committed to the M18 batteries now, and would like a brushless impact...but I don’t want another mess like this. I’m considering going back to Makita, which I never had issues with and don’t know why I moved away from (the colour, maybe? Red seemed faster).

In one of AVE's reviews he had stated that due to the material they used on the grips this very thing was likely. I use all of mine in an automotive setting and haven't had an issue.

Earlier this year, there was a thread on cordless impacts for shop use and i recommended Milwaukee Fuel. One of the members, I believe Skin said the Fuel is no good around oil, the rubber handles and housing covering swell up and crack.

Myself, I work around hydraulic oil quite often but never get it on the Milwaukee's. There is the expensive option like Snap-on and Mac. I have the yellow DeWalt's also and can't see them being good around oil.

Didn't the old Makita have just plastic handles. not sure how oil resistant new Makitas are

milwaukee 3/8" dr impact lost nearly all the rubber grips...

4 years of hyd oil, diesel fuel, brake cleaner, snow and rain took their toll on it....

finally the trigger stopped working...

sent it back for repair a couple weeks ago....

Glad to hear I'm not alone, I guess. This wasn't something I had ever given much thought to, wasn't even something I looked into before buying the Milwaukee set. Which I figured would be an upgrade over my white-and-black Makitas. Immediately after getting the Milwaukee stuff, I figured it was just a lateral move...now I'm not even sure it was that!

My Makita set had rubber handles, I'm pretty sure. I gave them to my dad, so I'll be able to check at some point.

Next set I get I will read up on the oil tolerance of the handles, etc.

Funny as I just watched the YT thing from the d-bag who got all over Milwaukee for not warrantying an M12 impact driver (2453 IIRC) near the end of 5 years ‘cause the grip was peeling. He finally shamed them via social media and they caved.

Talk about warranty abuse

Their Eservice is pretty amazing if you dont mind waiting.

My son bought a Fuel Sawzall a few weeks ago. Used it once for about 10 minutes cutting some thin steel.
After that the blade release would not open. Could not get the blade out. WTF!

Nearest warranty center is about a 2 hour drive one way from us.
He went on Milwaukee website and submitted a warranty claim. They emailed a prepaid FedEx mailing label to send it back almost immediately. Boxed it up and dropped it off at a local FedEx store. 9 days later FedEx dropped it off on the porch repaired at no cost. As it should be.

Moral of this story- I can't complain about about their Eservice either.

He clearly states the grip failed after a few years.
For those that follow Donyboy, he obviously is not a tool abuser, nor a "d-bag".
He didnt "get all over Milwaukee". He gave them a chance to fix their problem.
Milwaukee has had issues with their grips.
Its more a manufacturing issue than it is abuse.
And as such, they should back up their defect.

i chalked it up to (ab)normal wear and tear. the damaged rubber wouldnt be something i'd expect or demand warranty for.
if it was still working i wouldnt have dropped it off for repair.

ive already replaced it with another 3/8" dr fuel milwaukee. when the old one comes back i'll have a "spare" to use in the garage.
