I bought this drill from Home Depot last Friday. At 50 years old, this is my first battery drill. I have been using corded drills my whole life, even 20 years as an electrician. The drill seems to be great, lots of power! But, I have noticed a loud grinding like noise when you let off the trigger. If it is under load it will not make the noise. It just makes the noise when not under load, just pulling the trigger and letting it go. It does it in both speeds. As far as I know, this may be completely normal. Just questioning it because the outer cardboard box had been opened and it was the only one left. They seem to be pretty popular here, so would appreciate any feedback.

do you have the clutch set on the hammer setting? My Dewalt makes a different sound when put into hammer mode. Sometimes it's the simplest solutions.

Firstly - what model is it.. your probably just hearing the electronic brake slow the chuck down.. if you can post a vid, do so.. if not you can go on YouTube and watch some videos of Milwaukee's drills..

Pull the trigger in and run the drill at full speed. While it's running - pull the battery out. You should see the drill come to a gradual stop.. with the battery in, the sudden stop when you let go is the result of the electronic brake stopping everything suddenly That's probably what you're hearing. The Dewalt's are much louder and you hear a loud "clack" from the transmission.. it's just the slight play of all the inner workings suddenly being told to stop.

Cordless tools have made huge advances in the last few years. Many are now at corded tool power levels. Milwaukee was a good choice to go with. The "fuel" models are the most powerful offerings they have.

This should give you a good idea of what the fuel models can do.

kctyphoon, that is kind of what I thought was going on. It is the 2606-22CT model. This unit does not have hammer drill. I actually checked youtube first and could not find the noise because they were always using them under load. Thanks!

By now, your local HD must have new stock. Take a charged battery with you and ask the guy in the tool dept. to let you try another drill. See if it does what yours does. If not, take it to the return counter, get a refund and find another one to test before buying. I suggest rhis because there is no assurance that they will have a drill with charged battery to try.

Have a few of the older milwaukee fuel drills, when let pff the trigger they come to a nice quiet quick stop. The newest ones dont know model # grind like that when they stop. I believe its whatever keeps the chuck locked when its not spinning. Or the bearing balls for the drive function clutch engaging. But i know the exact sound your talking about. Other models will do also it if its spinning a large bit or something heavy. Large hole saw etc. While not under a load. Or something to stop it besides the chuck. I took a slow motion video of it and it slams hard enough the chuck "bounces" off it and spins opposite way a slight bit. Been using mine that way for about 6 months. No problems.
