I think they could be used for both, with out battery for brisk fall day. Heated under another jacket for winter.

I have enjoyed mine; i agree with the comment above. I wear long underware, t-shirt, and a sweatshirt under mine in the teens, below that i have a dickies jacket shell that i wear over the m12 jacket. For the price, tool only, it is a nice jacket. If i didnt have the m12 tools i dont know that i would make the investment into the battery / charger just for the jacket. Others opnions may vary.
