Milwaukee M18 trimmer bump head not working well

The bump head on my trimmer seems to accumulate grass swarf very quickly jamming the bump mechanism.

Is there a trick to reducing accumulation and clogging of the bump mechanism, or a better, more robust bump mechanism that I can replace the OEM one with?

The bump head works pretty good on my Milwaukee weedeater.

Sounds like you're cutting pretty tall grass/weeds? If so, start high and work your way down. Cutting from the bottom leads to long strands that get wrapped around the head.

To clarify, the issue I am having is an accumulation of debris inside the head which builds up to a point where the head can no longer be “bumped”. I’m curious if others have this problem and how they solved it.

I got tired of messing with string heads and got one of these. Works well for me fro my yard. It's lighter than the Milwaukee head too.

I've never experienced that issue, but I'm not familiar with the M18 Trimmer.

Those work fine if you never need to do any edging but are really made more for brush clearing. I cant really comment on the OP's issue because the bump head on my M18 trimmer works flawlessly.

Mine doesn’t work well, but it isn’t much of an issue as it’s super easy to just turn the head and feed it out

I just take it apart and clean it. If this is the worse thing you run across, you got an easy life.

First, are you using the correct line, and good stuff at that? Better line feeds more easily.
Second, I spray my bump heads and line with silicone spray. It prevents buildup and keeps things moving easier.

Many times when I disassemble the bump head, the line is crisscrossed so I unravel it all the way and rewind it so the coils are straight. When I use it the feeding is good. Like others say, spraying the head and line with silicone helps a lot.

I bought something similar because I could never reliably advance the amount of string. That simple replacement made the trimmer so much nicer to use.

Note one model has steel edged blades, others use plastic. I stuck with plastic as there's grass around things I don't want to scar up.
