5/8" hole. So far started near edge so I don't believe it would be hardened by welding. Ordered carbide tipped bit to see if it makes a different

Is the top mill finish with scale? The scale material can be very hard, try sanding the area where you are drilling. Use some form of lube even soapy water is better than dry

A Magbase drill has been on my "wish list" ever since I saw one being used in the shipyard drilling from the underside of a steel deck.

That is NOT a morse taper number 3 or a jacobs taper. That is a proprietary spindle that is not removeable. The chuck drives off of the flats, the shaft is not tapered and is just to locate the chuck radially. A jacobs taper would come loose if the spindle motor was reversed such as when tapping that these mag base models were intended for. I think the morse taper adapter shown by Steve in Socal is similar and a later style compared to the OP. <snip>
Firebrick43 you comment is incorrect. I have the same Milwaukee 4262-1 mag drill with a 3/4" Jacobs key-driven chuck on a large 4203 adjustable base. The drill spindle the OP is showing DEFINATELY has a Jacobs #3 tapered stub on the end for the chuck. I just popped my chuck off to confirm this. I measured the taper and it is J3 without a doubt.

My plan is to make a Weldon shank chuck out of 1.5" dia stock with JT3 hole and key drive on the motor end and a 3/4" hole with grub screws for a Weldon shank on the other end. I'm still thinking about how long to make it and how I can utilize the alignment pin and plug pushout spring. I need to be able to insert the spindle lock screw before the spring and pin goes in. More to come and the smoke rises a little higher. Bill

I have that same drill and chuck. I plan on making the same sort of adapter for mine (when I get it back from my friend who borrowed it). Please keep this thread updated with any ideas or progress.

We pretty much only use carbide cutters now, mild steel, ar, stainless. Wasn't worth having two sets when our carbide place can sharpen them reasonably.

FYI you can swap drill motors on those large Milwaukee bases. If you run the rack all the way up there's some 1/4" SHCS in counter bores holding the motor on, they also have three mounting positions depending on how much headroom you need under chuck.

Good day, would you happen to have the tech contact info? Or would you be willing to sell the shock piece, I'm looking for that in particular and haven't been able to find it. Many thanks!
