I have a milwaukee multimeter I got 7-10 years ago, I'd like to get some alligator clip leads but I've never bought any multimeter accessories before. Are they all universal, or do you have to buy a certain brand or pattern for them to work with the plugs on the meter?

They use 4mm banana plug sockets (universal), I like the Pico alligator clips best (cheap enough online)

Yeah banana jacks are pretty universal. There's a few different sets out there. Aeswave is a fantastic place to purchase from. Pomona has a nice kit with silicone leads clips probes back probes and piercing probes.

I've been recommending this place for leads and accessories. No personal experience but the feedback has been very good.
