anyone used the impact rated P2 bits they make? I bought a ton of them on sale sometime back and have been using them more and more lately. They STINK. I realized the profile is a bit narrow compared to other bits and they wind up stripping the screws pretty easily I guess cause of this.

I was at home depot yesterday and picked up some dewalt ones and the profile is MUCH fatter. I havent used them yet however, so not sure if they are really much better.

:shocking:

Yeah, the Milwaukee impact bits were very bad, fit wasn't right and they wore very fast. Supposedly the latest ones are decent, you can identify them as they are more silver rather than matte black.

The DeWalts were good, don't know about the latest versions as I loaded up on impact bits years ago during sales and haven't bought any since. Most of the time I use regular bits and only switch to impacts on tough tasks. The small bits like PH1, R1, slots are a waste in impact form.

For impact driver I prefer to use something with more positive engagement such as torx head. The torx driver usually comes in the box of screws.

I found both Milwaukee and Dewalt impact bits way too soft.
Im not sold on impact bits as a whole. I prefer regular ones. I dont care for the torsion action.

Just to report back: I used the dewalt ones today. Just small bits with the yellow impact ring. Not a single issue compared to the Milwaukee. No cam outs, nothing stripped, nada

Now wth do I do with the Milwaukee’s lol. Got. 2 25 packs lol

I have the black ones in a few kits. Can confirm they **** compared to the dewalts. I was gonna pick up some carbide ones but wondering if they're as good as they say.

Yea, I got some of the Milwaukee impact rated P2. They ****. Didn't take many hardened screws to wear the bit enough to cause cam out. I prefer some older Bosch, USA made, non impact bits with the anti cam out ribs. Had to use pliers to remove the screw from the bit because it gripped so well.

Just a curiosity, what brand of screws are you guys using? Any particular type, like deck screws in wood work or?

I have the same experience everyone else has had with the black Milwaukee impact bits. They strip very quickly. The other types like Torx or square are okay, but still not great.

The new silver colored ones are good.

Honestly the best Phillips bits I've had (In my limited experience) are the Bosch gold ones like this:

https://absupply.net/Bosch-TDP2108-P2-1In-Philips-Insert-Bits-Shank-14In-Pack-of-8.aspx

I've had one that I got from my Dad for almost 10 years ago. The gold coating has worn off but if I have a stubborn phillips screw it's the one I use.

I don't use anything philips anymore if I can help it, all torx for me. For the philips screws I encounter, I use Makita XPS, they seem to be pretty good.

GRK or Spax, you start using quality Torx head and you will never go back to Phillips.

Considering the stinking Phillips screws were like 7 bucks a box I can’t imagine the better stuff is any cheaper. Been awhile since I bought stuff and everything has gone up considerably

Yeah nope. The 2-1/2" GRK R4 screws I like to use a lot of are $12 for 100ct box.

I will use the Grip-rite constructions screws for wood working projects sometimes though, they are just under $9 for 1Lb. box. Now that I see that they aren't much cheaper than the GRK and aren't rated for structural or exterior/treated wood use). Yeah I probably won't use those anymore since they are almost the price of GRK/Spax

deck screws grip rite from home depot. it was a for a bench i was redoing.
Hmm ok. I used to use Grip Rite, but not anymore. The Lowe's nearby doesn't carry them, they have Fas-N-Tite. They do fine, if I do fine. Meaning if I don't slack on enough downward pressure and holding the driver at the right angle. I use to use Deck Mate but I hated the bit they supplied, and the screws. I ditched those quick. I use Dewalt bits and find them acceptable. If they start stripping I toss and reload a new bit. I also have not branched out and specifically tried others. Perhaps I should.

I've noticed a lot of guys going to Torx now. What is it that you like about them compared to Phillips? I've cammed out some Torx in metal connections (the quality is unknown) and that makes me shy away for other applications. Granted there are metal factors involved (Loctite, corrosion, etc). I'm wondering if woodwork Torx use is better? Different? What's your experience?

I hadn't thought about the cost comparison, you make a good point.
