Being an apartment dweller and into the GJ life is miserable. The housing market *****, was planning on moving but it fell through. Most of my tools are in storage and it's awful getting to anything at the moment. Lots of stuff thrown into Rubbermaids.

I picked up a 4-drawer and 3-drawer Packout this week and really like them. Already have several of their toolboxes for power tools. I'm thinking of making a mechanics toolset out of Packout drawers for basic work. When I do work at a friend's house, I can put them in my car and bring them with me, as opposed to now, where I have to guess what tools I might need, throw them in a bucket, and hope I didn't forget anything.

When I eventually buy a house, I think they could still work fine for my garage. Stack them along the wall on top of the dolly and they could be my home tool "cart". If I have any new contractors come over that I dont trust yet, I could more easily wheel the tools into the house, hidden away. Compared to my original dream garage of having high end Lista drawers everywhere.

I probably should have a backyard workshop anyway to do most of my fun projects and save the garage for car repair work. So I dont know if putting all of my tools in the garage in fixed drawers makes sense anyway, maybe it was just a dumb dream.

How would you guys feel about using Packout drawers for car mechanics purposes and any tips on setting them up as such?

Packouts are not a good solution for hardline mechanics tools if you have a garage. Too expensive and too inflexible. However in your situation I think they are a good idea for now.

I use the packout boxes as track tool boxes. They work pretty good for that, and I keep stuff organized in them with bags.

Only thing I don't like is they will tip if you aren't paying attention with lots of heavy stuff in the drawers.
