Milwaukee Socket Set Impressions

I just got the Milwaukee 56 piece 3/8 socket set from the Home DEpot deal of the day and wanted to give my quick impressions as I haven't seen any yet.

I'm really quite impressed. I like that I feel like Milwaukee tried to do a little more than just put their name on a hand tool line (like I feel Dewalt did...although their 1/4 inch set is my most used set because od the compact case).

The things I like:
-the case insert comes out to use in a tool box
-the ratchet is decent and heavy but not too heavy like the dewalt.
-the sockets are chromed on the inside too
-the sockets are square on one end...very useful
-the markings are on 2 sides of the sockets

Things I don't like
-it would be nice to have the markings on all 4 sides of the sockets and colored like their wrenches
-the chrome isn't great (Proto chrome is the best I've scene)
-the knurling on the extensions is in the middle rather than the drive end and it is not diamond or hash but simple lines.

Are the Milwaukee sockets heavier with their square bases than a similar round socket?

Are the socket size markings laser etched or stamped?

Interested to hear about some real world usage.

At first I didn't like the idea of the square end but I think it was just because it didn't look traditional. The more I think about it, I actually think it would be useful to keep them from rolling around.

The Taiwan dewalt sockets are actually very high quality for the price that you pay

Do you think the square design will make for clearance issues compared to standard sockets? Cool idea but 200 for the kit normal price is quite steep

Most of the sizes actually look necked down at the square. The smaller ones do look enlarged to allow for the square and it does appear they used similar if not the same blanks for each run of 4-5 sizes to standardize the square size.


Interesting though. I like useful innovations.

That's a really nice set...I went around and around about it. The price was great on that deal but I have so many sockets now I just couldn't do it that day and I bought cordless recip saw instead.

Still it be great to have at least for me. Maybe if it ever comes around again

I've got the same set. Ditto on all points, minus the chrome. Don't disagree, just haven't seen a recent Proto for comparison.

Markings are stamped in, and yes, the sockets neck down to form the square. This could cause a weak spot in the sockets, but under normal use, I don't see it as an issue. I wouldn't use a cheater or big breaker bar with these.

2 days ago, set was half price only $90.

I ordered one, got it yesterday, didnt have time to open it yet. I have the smaller set like 11 sockets and friend has the medium set.

The square sockets help hand turning when your fingers are greasy.

I heard the square end is supposed to allow for turning with and open end wrench. I can't really think of a situation in which I would need to do this. Does anyone else see a use for this?

Yeah thats the intention, I could see doing it if you need a socket to get to something and it wont fit with the ratchet on it.
