I know Tekton is the flavor of the month around here, but I didn't care for the few pieces of their stuff I had. Ended up giving them away.
I also know the cool thing is to hate on Gearwrench, but for a cheaper tool, they do pretty good.
The limited amount of Milwaukee hand tools I've used have been pretty decent, but I wouldn't necessarily place them above Gearwrench.
Considering you don't have a need for professional use tools, you'd probably be good to just go to some stores and handle a variety of stuff and buy what you personally like.
It's a very crowded market in the lower/middle price tool world. And there are some strangely strong and emotional opinions about what the best tool for your money is, but they're all surprisingly close to each other when you look at it objectively. There will also be instances of every brand where someone had a junk tool and crappy customer service to match when they tried to resolve it. Vehicles, tools, appliances, etc., happens everywhere. The worst is all the parroted information where people have no first hand experience, but just repeat the last thing they heard as fact.
