I'm looking into mini splits for my house- which has windows everywhere. For aesthetics I would like to mount the unit centered on the wall over windows. Can I cut a hole in the header and run the lines through it? House is a dutch colonial from the 20's with plaster walls in LI NY. Thanks

There may be other considerations but header strength is not significantly compromised by a 2” hole at center of its width. If it is not in a especially high load bearing position I wouldn’t fret over being away from center. Makes things a bit awkward on the outside, though, routing drain line and refrigerant lines both mechanically and aesthetically.

Consider using one with ceiling cassettes or other hidden indoor unit. Seen some with a picture in front of it. Going through the header probably means you will see the lines from inside the window as well

Actually i think I'll be able to run the lines in a soffit on the outside of the house. My concern is cutting a 2" hole in the header.

No problem with the hole if located as already imentioned, but just want you to know that the cassette can be placed in center of the room or close as joist location allows. I have a cassett in my main living area and it is ideal. However my wall unit in master bed/bath is just about as good.

I have heard cassettes are not as efficient. Also, condensate leak or pump failure scare the **** out of me.

I haven't seen many houses built in the 20's that even had headers over the windows and doors.

All depends on the installation situation. On my unit the condensate exits the unit about 5” above the ceiling drywall. It is all downhill over to the soffit and vertical drop to ground. Not muchchance for a leak. If pipe plugs up the overflow will be out the unit into the living area where it would be noticed immediately. Much better situation than in my previous house where hvac leaked into closet and spread under hardwood floor. Didn’t catch it for maybe a week.

My wall unit could leak down the wall and and soak carpet pretty good perhaps before I might notice it. But the casset can only leak one place, - out the grill and on floor in middle of room.
