Hi,

I have some Mini Air Line Filters i use when using my air tools, impact gun etc etc.

They aren't the most amazing things in the world, but they do trap water when i use them and haven't given me any issues. Only problem I've had is a pressure drop when using my air gun which sometimes mean running without the filter to get something really tight loose (like a crankshaft bolt)

I've got them setup like this:

The blue end facing my air tool etc with the drain valve at the bottom.....

I was in my local tool store today and they have them on sale from a generic retailer. The picture on the packaging however says they should be setup like this:

So with the drain valve facing the tool :dunno:

That can't be right surely ? The drain valve should be at the bottom no ?

The filter media appears to be setup to be used as described. In your use the water would have to pass through the filter media to enter the chamber and would then be able to continue on through the tool. Expansion of the air before filtering is the usual setup and is described as essential to the process.

It reads like your connecting it backwards. Blue end would be the inlet, chrome end the outlet. That would let the air expand in the chamber before passing through the filter media. I'm mostly just going by the first picture.

I've mostly gone by the rule of thumb that dirty air goes from the outside of the filter medium to the inside on a round filter. On the blue (if it is the inlet) is there any angle to the ports inside that would give the incoming air a swirling action?

The blue end has 4 small holes in it, both in the inlet port and on the exterior of the blue section internal of the clear plastic case - you can see one of these holes in the first pic it's at 3 o'clock.

The white plastic cover over the sponge/filter material has an angle to it. It's narrow at the blue cap end widest at the chrome end.

By design you would have to be using it correctly. The drain valve is a dead give away. It would have to be really full of water for that to do anything if it was facing up. Not only that but if it were to catch a bunch of water with the blue ring down the water would cover the filter instead of puddling down at the bottom where there is room for it.

I have one like that inline with my plasma setup right before the Motorguard filter. I don't think it has caught more than a few drops in mine.

That's basically the thought i had, drain valve at the bottom.

They have caught water the way i use them, better than going through my tools.

I have a bunch of those. You have it installed the way the instructions in mine describe.

You can unscrew it with a 14mm wrench and follow the air path. Incoming air goes into the big bowl with the schrader. Then through the filter and out through the blue end.
