I built this about 20 years ago. I call it a, Dandy Dave's Li'l Digger. Everyone that see it in action say's Well, That's just Dandy Dave.. Hence the name. Walks and works just like the big ones. Built from discarded parts and bits of metal. None of it was meant to be a Power Shovel. Watch the You Tube Video here.

Pretty slick! That would be a fun little machine to have around. Any plans to build a hoe or a crane boom for it like the real ones had optional?

Thanks for posting! It's a neat demo of yester-years technology. I would enjoy trying it for 10-15 minutes. Then I would appreciate my Bobcat 320 even more!

What type of clutches are you using to engage the various cable pulleys?

I'm assuming you are using some type of hydraulic gear motor for the tracks?

There is a steam engine show near Wrightsville, PA each year. Have you ever been to it? It's on my list to attend one of these years....

This came up next after the OP's video. The restoration of one of the big diggers after over 50 years under water.

Well that's what I thought 20 years ago. They did it then. I should have no problem doing it now 80 to 100 years later. Maybe I was a shovel designer in my last life??? Who Knows?

Yes. The undercarriage was leftovers from a Vermeer W1A trenching machine. The motor was from a Jacobsen lawn mower. A 12 HP 301 Kohler. The hoist clutch was from that. It is an electro magnet type. The crowd clutches were the friction forward & reversing clutches from a Wayne Road sweeper. Yes, The under carriage walks hydraulically. I by chance found a rotary coupling in a junk shop that allowed me to set it up so it swings 360 and keeps going without tangling the hoses. I have been to Kinzars Rough and Tumble, PA and also National Pike Gas and Steam out at the western end of PA. Also belong to HCEA. (Historic Construction Equipment Association.) And have had it at some of their shows.

Ah, if you're in the HCEA, you should bring it down to LakeSide Sand and Gravel sometime. Im sure they'd get a kick out of it next to their collection of dinosaurs.

Yes, I'm aware of that show. I'm in New York State Not too far from where Conn and Mass meet. That would be a bit of a ride but I'm sure it would be worth it sometime.
