That weld positioner is really slick. You did a great job on that. It almost needs it's own build thread. For instance, I'd like to see exactly how you accomplished the grounding hook up. I think I see some stranded wrapped around the spindle.

Thank you. I've been really bad at keeping up with posts. However, I put together a few videos. First one shows more about it. Second one shows it in use. And yes, I used a braided strap for ground. It's been working pretty well.

I hope to have a better update soon. I've also been getting ready for a garage addition so that's been taking up some time as well. And eventually, the whole operation is going to stop while my tools are in a storage container. Lots too do.

Wow - nice work on those wheels. That positioner really is the cat's a$$!

I always look forward to your posts, and seeing how you're building tools to do more fab work. Good luck with your garage build.

Well, after spending many months trying to get some things in place, a lot of researching and then a lot of searching on Craigslist/eBay/etc, I finally found the donor I was looking for.

Best part about it?

I'll have a better update soon and I'll explain why I picked this mower. Now that I know what parts I will be using, I'll be able to finish the design. Hopefully quickly. And get started building.

Yeah, hummer wheels are fairly safe. Unless you were able to undo all the bolts while it was still pressurized there wouldn't be an explosion. The biggest issues I have seen is with improperly aligned/sized/welded centers but given the authors past history I'm sure he will over-do correctly.
given the authors past history I'm sure he will "over-do correctly".

You certainly hit that nail on the head!!!!

Scale Mini Mining Truck Build

I have finally resurrected this project after a very long hiatus. I started about 3 years ago mostly trying to figure out scaling, wheels/tires and axles while I searched for an engine. I started posting about it in my mini dozer build thread. I quickly ran into a handful of road blocks that I won't really get into right now. However, the good news is, I'm past most of the issues that were holding me back. No, I didn't get divorced.

I'm about 75% done on the design. I plan to only get to about 90%. There are some things I'm just going to figure out as I go (hose routing, controls, pedals etc). Most of the hard stuff is figured out and the last thing I'm struggling with is the cab. I had an idea all along but once I started drawing it, I don't like it. I may ask for some feedback once I get a few concepts.

So here's where I'm at so far.

The first question I always get is "why". And my answer is "because I like dozers and mining trucks. And I already built a dozer". Does it make sense? Probably not but I do what I like.

Of course I have even less time than I've ever had in my life but I started building parts again. I'll eventually post all of the details on my website in a easy to read format (like I did with the dozer build). For now, here's a few images.

That is all for now. I hope to keep the momentum and post as regularly as I can if people are interested in seeing this build.

Dozer that is fantastic,
A couple questions if you don't mind.
How big is it and how many yards for payload?
Is it going to have a hydraulic final drive?
What a grand project.

That's a cool idea and would look great along with your mini dozer. The nay- sayers are just jealous, it's your time and money go for it. Looking forward to seeing the progress.

This is going to be sweet. I love working mini models like your dozer and the Don Campbell tractors.

Love it!
South of chicago. Have a few kubota 3cyl diesels and one 3 cylinder 1.5 cat Diesel engine that would be perfect sized for your project!

Oh we definitely want to see what you do with this thing. Your dozer build was awesome too!

What do you have there for the rear axle? Is it a stock part or something you put together?

I am willing to bet it will be measured in cubic feet, not yards. :)

It looks like a great complimentary build to your dozer. I will watch this one too, but I am really waiting for you to build the mini front end loader, mini excavator, and mini tractor trailer with scale Landoll to haul everything...

What size are the tires so I can get a feel for the scale?

Re: Scale Mini Mining Truck Build

Looks like skidsteer tires. So 28-31” depending on size

I think you are right. Zooming in on the Pic, I think I can see something that looks like 26 or 28 on the side.

37's would be cooler, but this is still infinitely better than my mini mining truck. :beer:

Those are the exact same tire that's on my skid steer which are 12-16.5, which works out to a 33" tire. Looking forward to the completion of this build.

Re: Scale Mini Mining Truck Build

So to answer a few questions....

I am an engineer by trade. I do this kind of stuff to really understand what it takes to design something that works. And it's fun.

The tires are 10-16.5 skid steer tires. They measure about 31" in diameter. They had the right look that I wanted. I ended up using H1 wheels because I got them pretty cheep. I modified them a long time ago to work as dually wheels. It's not ideal because to get the inside wheel off, I need to remove the hub. I'm not too worried about it because I'll probably never be more than 100 feet from a trailer or my garage. I think I tried looking and never found 16.5" dually wheels. At least not for what I paid for the H1 wheels.

As for scale, it is going to be about 5 feet tall, 5 feet wide and 9 feet long. For you metric guys, it looks like that's 1.5 meters tall, 1.5 meters wide and a little under 3 meters long. It works out to about 1/4 scale of a 785D which is what I'm modeling it off of. Very huge. Very impractical (considering I live on a 1/4 acre lot in suburbia with neighbors all around me). But it's going to be pretty fun to build.

As for the rear axle, a long time ago I tried modifying a handful of different axles. I had all sorts of ideas. But nothing was working out how I wanted. So I built my own. Only standard parts are the hydraulic wheel motors and the 14 bolt spindles and hubs.

Basically, I bought some large square tubing and the wheel motor is sandwiched between that and the outer spindles. The outer spindle is the original 14 bolt spindle, some DOM tubing and some 1/2" plate. Here are the pieces that make up the axle. Please ignore my horrible welds on that first spindle. I was having difficulties with a new spool of wire and I should have just stopped and fixed it. But I have very little time to work on this and I get frustrated easily when I'm not completing what I set out to do that night.

48218631267_f67c961c3f_c.jpg

I took a little break and the next spindle turned out a lot better. That rotary weld positioner has been coming in handy. I also finish ground the bore with a homemade grinding attachment for my lathe.

48218635757_ac02c81071_c.jpg[url=https://flic.kr/p/2gsV7uV]

Then I capped the end of the tubing and finish machined it on the mill.

48218585571_e3f0902664_c.jpg[url=https://flic.kr/p/2gsURzD]

And that's what you see in my earlier post.

48175949536_db94141d5b_c.jpg[url=https://flic.kr/p/2gp9knA]

As for the power plant, I got a Kubota D662 out of a Jacobsen mower. It had a five section pump on it but I cut it down to three. One for drive, one for lift cylinders (and also the second drive speed) and one for the hydraulic steering.
