Mini Rack for Parts Storage Cases

I made this little storage rack for the plastic storage containers I like to use. I like the black and yellow storage cases because I have a lot of my screws and misc stuff stored in these...for example, one of them is wall anchors/picture hanging stuff....I even have drill bits in it....

My wife even likes it because she now knows where to find it....and where to put it back.

Made the whold thing out of spare wood laying around.

Agreed.. Simple and easy... I've been digging around the garage over the last few weeks andi'm amazed at how many nuts, bolts and screws,, etc i have in different containers. It would take a hell of a bit of patience on my end to actually sort them but this would be a good easy way to at least divide them up to where it makes more sense.



What brand boxes are they.. What size..?

Both HD and HF carry them....they are about 16" wide....come in different styles...some have lots of little bins....others are deaper and larger...

One of the cases has all of my specialty fastners...lag bolts, anchors, concrete screws...etc.....another has all of the electrical hardware....EMT clamps, strain relief, etc.

I have room to add more....but I want to get some deeper cases...for the larger items.

Actually.....it's just the one section....a guy must have a place to put his beer....and....on homework nights, I'll take one of my boys out there to do his homework....divide and conqure.....

And....it's one place that does not get trashed....paperwork maybe, but I don't use it for hamering......

Wow, looks great! I might have to try that with my own cases. But... that would cause me to look to buy more, sending things into further disarray. My cases are currently vertical in some shelving.

Nice set up John. I made a storage rack similar to yours some years ago. I needed a small rack that would sit on a workbench. For the bins I used a handfull of small muffin tins that had 6 compartments. They were a dollar each from a discount store. Worked pretty good.

OK, I liked it sooooooo much that I burned over to HF and bought 6 of them while they are on sale for $5.99 each. They are decent quality but I do have a question for those of you that have tried this.

How do you get the stupid label off of the top? It has glue under it and even if you do peel it off a bit, the glue remains. Since it is plastic one has to be careful about what one uses on it. I tried a little heat and that seemed to work on the paper part but the glue was left and it has a tendency to warp the top which is not what I wanted to do. Any thoughts?

Update:

Turns out, WD 40 works great. Spray it on, let it sit for a few minutes and then wipe it off with paper towel. Everything comes off great.

I like the top metal box because you can pull the drawer out, flip open the top and sort through the contents. Looks like you need to pull the plastic box all the way out and remove to open. How about adding a 1/4 in plywood base to the plastic cases so they can be pulled out and left in place while opening the top?

Scot, I have used Windex to remove glue many times. It doesn't hurt the plastic. Stay away from Goo Gone ( ask me how I know) and removers like that. It will actually "burn" the plastic. Just spray on the Windex and let it soak for a couple of minutes, then wipe off. If it is stubborn you might have to do it more then once. I have only saw a couple of times where it didn't work, out of the many times I have used it. I also have used WD40 to remove glue residue.

I used a heat gun to get the label up with most of the glue attached and then used Goof Off to get the glue off.

Rister...99% of the time I end up taking the case to where I'm working.

Hit-By-Thunder -Nice Work! I am considering a similar setup; do I see hardboard panels between the trays? I was thinking plywood with saw kerfs for the masonite to sit in, but I got concerned on resting any weight on the 1/8" stuff.

ddawg--nice build! I've got a few of those when they were made by ZAG, before Stanley bought them. That's what I keep all of my wood screws in. Handy as hell!

Hmmm.........is that what they call it? b/c that's what I've got. I insist on the same brand so that everything is identical.

Mine are not THAT full.....no sag...yet....but if I was going to load them up that much, I think I would find a better way to store the items.

Scot, Use Ronsin lighter fluid it works great on any kind of sticker or label and does not take the gloss off of plastic. Also works on gum,tar and small oil based spots on carpet.

I have several of the Plano type boxes that I keep a few of several nut and washer sizes. The ones with the 3/4 through 1 inch get a bit heavy. I have several drawer sets from metal desks built into my workbench and currently keep the trays in these. I was just imagining a vertical wall rack with room to grow.
