Seems like it'd come in handy for seals and maybe some plumbing work (e.g. stuck balancing spools). Does anyone have experience with this Cal-Van kit?

I have a cornwell unit I'm pretty sure is a rebrand of that Cal-Van. I've used it once or twice and it was fine.

IIRC Cornwell had it on sale for $10 more than calvan.

I have the same one from Matco, handy for odd stuff. Pulled seals with the screw tip and the claw thing for pulling bolts and something else, plus small races with the hook.

We have one of those at the shop. The only things that have been used successfully out of it are the single hook attachment and the little bolt hook thing. The rest of it is too light for what we do, and it seems like the 2 jaw attachments don't grab anything solidly enough to really give it a whack..

I have an old HF version of that kit, which is a copy of the Snap On set. The HF version that I have is absolute garbage- the puller jaws break off really easily and they appear to be cast iron and not forged steel.
I am not saying to get the Snap On set, but look at something by OTC. I have a lot of their pullers and slide hammers and while they are all imported, they are not junk. At least what I have isn't. But I don't think they make a set like that.
The problem with that set, either SO or HF, or.... is that the puller arms are "free" and there is no way to positively engage them; they can just flop around. This makes it pretty useless IMO.

Anybody know if the Cal-Van 49700 and the HF 2 lb slide hammer are the same thing? Or, if not, any real difference between the two? I don't mind spending the money, but would prefer not to spend double on something that has no appreciable difference.

the HF one I got stripped pretty easy cause the threads were poor. I rethreaded it with a die and all is better with it. Use it to pull pilot bearings etc., once in a great while. It isn't the best but the price was right for as little as I use it. I also have a larger HF one used to pull large hubs, and axles. Used it one time and it has been sitting for pretty close to 15 years. Would be a good boat anchor.
