I am in the process of finishing a new 24 x 24 x 12 red iron building and could use some advice. I have not decided on a brand yet but I have read through a lot of threads over the last 2 weeks. What size should I get with a 12ft ceiling? I am looking at a 18000btu or should I go 24000btu? It has standard 3" vinyl insulation and garage door is insulated. I am located in Oklahoma. It will all the time when weather gets hot and when cold.

Subscribed... I'm in Arizona and planning a stick framed 24x30x12 foot ceilings. Pretty much have arrived at the same tonnage that you have. Our heat will out weigh the cold you have in OK, so I will be interested in how you plan your system.

Too many variables to accurately say what size. The difference in a well insulated building and a building with no insulation could be easily double the size.

Although it will cost more, 2 smaller units are better than 1 bigger one. With one unit, you will definitely need additional air circulation.

One bonus of mini-split is you can throw some solar panels on the roof and hook up a grid-tie inverter and sell power back to pay for your heating and cooling. OK and AZ are great location for solar generation.

Watching this thread as I am in OK as well with a 24x36 with 12' walls.. Mine is a pole-barn that I have framed in the walls with 2x4 and R13 Craft-faced Fiberglass insulation with 1/2" drywall. Have not done the roof yet but the whole shop is wrapped in double-bubble. Looking at the same 3" Vinyl for the roof insulation. A calculator I looked at recommended a 24k BTU for my space on one site but 18k on another site.

We need much more info to provide an accurate load calculation.

As for the number of indoor units required, I don’t think 24x24 necessitates two as theoldwizard1 mentionned. It is not even 600 sq ft. No problem at all for a single head.

I have looked into others means. I think the mini split might fit my needs, but I am not counting out the others. I would just like to get an idea of the size of the unit I need to be looking at.

The building has 2 windows (1 on North wall and 1 on south wall ), 1 walk through and 16x10 insulated door both on west wall on a concrete slab.

I just put in an Mitsu 18,000BTU unit in my 650 SF garage (14' ceiling, well insulated) that has one 8' by 10' garage door and 3 windows. So far it will heat up the space nicely, but haven't had hot weather to try the cooling side. It was sized to provide minimal warming (take the chill off) and minimal cooling (knock down the heat/humidity).

I also have a large ceiling fan for distribution/mixing
