My shop is getting closer to completion and I am starting to plan for my MrCool mini splits.

A little about my building:
- located in San Antonio Tx
- 23’x23’
- alleyway driveway is where the doors are
- first floor is all shop, 2 single car garage doors, a man door and the slider out to the pool
- top floor is play room, office, guest suite, etc.
- spray foam insulation throughout to include the ceiling of the garage
- when we did the metal roof, we added 3” of rigid foam prior to installing the roofing

Planning for a mini split up and one down. Ingram’s thought a 12k unit up and a 12 or 18 k unit in the garage.

What do you guys think? I don’t want the room upstairs to be hot.

Thanks in advance!

Jim

I live in central NJ and have a similar area room setup in size but single level. and well insulated but facing south.
MY LG 18K doesn't even break a sweat (pun intended) on those days where high humidity and temps happen.
I would advise the 15-18K in the upstairs as cold air drops and heat rises.
You will want to run the unit longer (the evaporater fan will run but the condenser won't)
And add ceiling fans as you save money once the humidity drops before the temperature does.

12k’s are more efficient

They rock, 2x 12’s should be no problem.

I have 9k’s in 600sq ft apartment. Just one for the whole apartment. Heats it up no problem. That’s with a max of 70 degree difference between outside and inside. You likely have a max of a 40 degree differential. Apartments are hardly insulated. But that’s probably offset by the fact that there are lots of them in one building helping each other out.

I'm in Texas. I've done a few. The last one was a 500 sqft boat house (poorly insulated) - we used a 12000 BTU unit, it could have used a little help. If you have foam in the walls, and ceiling, you should be good, but I agree - bigger unit goes up top.

IF you're concerned at all, go bigger. This is not traditional ducted HVAC, these things throttle and do a great job at at it. The other factor is how often do you use it - if you don't live there, then you want more HVAC to be able to cool / heat faster when you need to use it.

With foam insulation all the way around (note, not just the 3" on top) - you'll be set. Open cell foam does a good job of closing the gaps that's left by the flat foam insulation you've installed.

I think Ingram's is probably pretty close to right.
