Looking at a Halcyon Mini-split heat pump to heat and cool a 1500 sf, 12' ceiling open shop. Plan to use 3 power heads with the ability to add-on 1 power head in the future if I add walls for an office.

Anybody have any experience with the Mini-Split in a shop application?

The system I have been quoted is not cheap but it is about 25% less expensive than a forced air gas furnance with an air conditioner unit and ductwork. I understand the mini spilt is also more efficient.

I have two quotes. Both were for 2 ton mini-splits 16 - 17 SEER. One Mitsubishi and one Sanyo. Both were $3200, from seperate dealers.

I've got a technician whose company lets him do work on the side checking on prices for me. The prices avaliable on the internet for the same equipment makes it look like they are getting $1000 for the installation.

I have the power wiring, interconnecting wiring, outside mounting bracket, and drain piping already in place.

a key reason that the mini splits are more efficient is that there are no duct losses through leakage or the air in the duct adsorbing or rejecting heat into the atic.
if you are going to have open ductwork in the shop then that part of the efficiency gain is lost on your application

I don't know about the other one but the Mitsu has frequency drives on all 3 motors. when it nears set point temp it slows down and it runs even quieter than normal which is very quiet. I have 2 of them. My hardware cost was about $1700 per including the line set and they take about a day to install if you are slow and careful. I did the install as I have the licenses and equipment. 2 summers and winters so far and they are both 100% trouble free so far.
