How do mini-splits generally perform in hot temperatures compared to portable A/C units? Here in Los Angeles, my garage, now converted into a home theater room, gets very hot due to no windows, no ceiling insulation, and a movie projector that blows warm air all the time. I've been using an old Soleus 13,000BTU Portable A/C unit that *barely* got the job done, but the compressor just went the way of the dodo :(

Garage is 176 SqFt. Would you recommend a mini-split? Would it get the room super cold?

Mini splits are used all over the world except USA for primary cooling and heating. So the answer is definitely yes to doing the job of keeping your room cool as long as it is insulated properly.
