Mini Split in my new shop

I want to install a mini split in the kitchen area of my new shop. I already have the wiring on the outside wall. I think I can do it myself and yes I understand that I need to get a licensed H and A guy to sign off on it to have a valid warrant.

Im trying to decide which manufacturer to go with. I’ve heard that Mitsubishi (spelling) is good and that some of the lesser brands are not so good. I’ve also heard that you can save some money if you can charge the system yourself instead of going with a precharged unit. Can anyone give me any guidance before I make the plunge?

thanks

Search. Tons of opinions but the DIY models are precharged and don't need an hvac guy to swing by for startup.

There are lots of them out there. I just installed a Pioneer 24K unit a couple of months ago. I ordered the lines in the length I needed so I wouldn't have to cut and re-flare. It's technically NOT a DIY unit, but they seem to support you if you install it yourself.

You will need to evacuate the lines. You can buy the necessary tools for around $100 or so.

Pioneer supposedly doesn't require a licensed HVAC person to sign off on it, you can just register it after you get it installed. Pioneer has a step-by-step video on their website, and there are lots of other Youtube videos out there.

I already have the required tools (I do auto AC), and knew a couple of HVAC guys that could bail me out if I screwed it up. However, it went pretty smoothly and I've been using it for both heating and cooling so far.

I'm sure there are other good ones other than Pioneer out there, I just got a great deal on an unopened return, so I went with them.

You may find no one will sign off. They want the whole job and the equipment or no thanks. You can def do it.

Maybe the diy Mr cool allow warranty for diy. Would make sense.

Warranty does little with who installs it, but more where you bought it. If you can find a seller of Mitsubishi online, I doubt the factory will warranty it. Factory warranty will most likely want proof where it was purchased and if it didn't come from an authorized dealer, you are out of luck. Even if a licensed contractor does the install.

There are many companies that will sell to the homeowner with no warranty issues. Mr Cool is one.

Find out what is popular in your area. Stop by a big commercial HAVC supplier and ask.
You want to be able to get spare parts within hours or a day not weeks should your system require such in the future.
