mini split leaks inside

Help!!!

My mini split 2 ton unit was just installed after a functions check and clean up the guys left, 2 hours later the unit is dripping water out the corner and down my drywall.

I shut the unit off and placed a drain pan to catch the water coming out and left for 4 hours to do things with wife (okay went to see Mamma Mia the musical for her).

Anyways I cut the unit back on a/c (78*) and within in less than a minute water in a stead stream starts right back up.

I am so mad I could scream, now I have to get the installers back out here tomorrow. I know that some water condensation will occure but it filled a 44oz cup even after being shut off.

Check your drain line. Mine had gotten kinked and was backing up into the unit.

Unit appears to be dehumidifying properly.

Check that indoor unit is installed level and that the drain pan is properly sloped to drain.

Condensate drain should be hard piped - not a flexible tube. See install manual. Installation instructions may, or may not, require a trap in the drain line. Verify. Condensate should drain to daylight at convenient spot and be equipped with a splash block.

Confirm that no packing materials, debris, etc. are obstructing drain pan and line.

Call the knuckleheads back and have them correct this. They should also show you how to clean the condensate pan, service the filter, use the remote temperature control, etc.

Check that the outdoor unit is installed level and plumb. That there are no obstructions to airflow within three feet of the unit. Refrigerant line should be insulated as directed by the manufacturer, and should have no loops or "traps". Ensure that insulation used is suitable for outdoor applications. All wall penetrations to be sealed in a workmanlike manner. They should have left you a warranty certificate, installation and operating manuals, etc.

Check your drain line. Mine had gotten kinked and was backing up into the unit.

Mine did the same thing, check outside were your drain pipe comes out, mine has a constant drip to flow. Large amount of water is good just needs to be draining outside.

I got ******* today snaking cables for two wall mounted tvs and did not get to calling the guys. I am going to give them a call first thing tomorrow. I took a day off from the garage and decided to get some honeydoos' done.


Redsky you are 100% correct in your post I believe. And yes it is dehumidifying like crazy.

you cannot hard pipe a mini- split...it is meant for a flexible hose connection on the back side of the evaporator....I install these weekly.

I install tons of these too, one preference I have is I use the reinforced vinyl tubing, really helps from those nuisance kinks.

Not sure how they installed it or what kind it is. Most you can switch the drain line from one side of the pan to the other, depending on how you choose to mount it. Maybe they left the plug out of the hole that needs plugged. Line slipped off. not level. Huge snake laying in the pan (not likely, just threw that in there to see if you were still reading along).

I'm very sure it's nothing major and an easy fix, don't loose too much sleep over it, other than the pain in the rear of having them come back again.

does it have a condensate pump in it? we've had the pump fail on a couple here at work and thats usually the outcome.. a stream of water going down the wall. pump dies and doesnt pump out the water, so it just pushes out and down the wall

You're correct. The ductless split systems generally call for a condensate drain hose rather than hard pipe. This will make for a faster (read less expensive) install.

If using hose, verify that the drain can run free and clear, without accidental traps or kinks.

Also monitor the hose where exposed to sunlight. The typical vinyl hose can suffer damage from the UV and may curl or deform, restricting flow.

These units drain by gravity. If a condensate pump is required (for a basement installation for instance), the manufacturer generally has pumps available as an accessory.

Also Check to make sure the vent tube is on the float switch if it uses a remote mount pump. I cant tell you how many service calls i get on these DL mini`s for water leaking and all it is is the vent falls off the float switch when they hang it on the mount.

I got the installers back out here this past Saturday and it has been working fine since.

They moved the drain line around in the pack of lines going thru the wall and problem solved. (I hope)

I used it for the first time this evening and set at 74* with a fan to move the air around it works well enough to keep me comfortable on the other side of the garage. If I was working on the car side and right under the unit I would have had to turn the temp up to keep the chills at bay.
