Mini-Split Lineset

Howdi,
I am installing by myself a mini-split system. Its a 4-Zone system and from Mitsubishi. I have completed the wiring from the main panel to the disconnect box outside. I will be getting the units tomorrow. I have done enough research and seen videos on their install and look fairly simple.

However, I only have one concern, the linesets. My Lineset requirements are anywhere from 10ft to 30ft. The HVAC place sells them in 50ft lengths. I do my own plumbing in the house and comfortable with soldering pipes, however I am not sure if I am comfortable enough to cut these to length, flare and braze them.
Are there other options? Any tips?

The units I installed (by myself) used soft copper tube with single flare fittings. As long as you can remember to put the flare fitting on the tube before making the flare, the installation should be easy. As for length, measure twice cut once. Assuming the lines will have a few curves along the route you can adjust for exact length by making the curves bigger or smaller.

Mitsu will be happiest if you flare the line-set. Reason being, that with the small dia tubing you have to be a hand to braze, not sweat, the copper and not create a little *********** on the inside of the tubing that restricts flow. May seem small, but it is a big deal. If you choose to braze, make sure you back purge the line set. My recommendation is to buy the pre-insulated lineset. Cut off the factory flares and do your own. Buy a Ritchie or Ridgid flaring tool. Costly, but nowhere near the cost or pita if you end up with a refrigerant leak, and keeping the gas in the system is the primary problem for all manuf. Confirm minimum line set length and don't push it. Get the condensing unit off the ground.

You will like this set-up. It will cool very well, and economically. Not sure where you are, didn't notice, but if you are in a heating market, run the bejeepers out of it for heat and you will save a lot of dough. The heat saving will end up paying for the system. Good luck with your install.

Thanks for the input Jack. I do live in the Northeast where it gets below freezing for a good couple of months. I have a concrete slab then another 3" thick condenser pad and then the Mitsubishi condenser mount on top of it. So, it should be a good 8 - 10 inches of the ground. Its also a 1-1/2 feet away from the side of the house.

Quick question? How many wires from the Condenser unit to the Indoor unit? Is it 4 wires. Can I use #18 for this wire since the amp drawn by the indoor unit is around 1A.

There are 3 wires plus a ground. I use 14/3 romex with ground.

Phil is correct on this. Remember you have L1 and L2 feeding 220v L3 is comm between units. Not sure how Mitsu does it but I know with Fujitsu we have the comm loop between 2 & 3. 14/3 w/ground only!
