I am a long time lurker, waiting for the day that I got my own place with a garage. Well the time has come. I purchased a home back in February with a 28 x 22 two car garage.

I am looking at installing one of these...
http://www.homedepot.com/p/t/204062250?storeId=10051&langId=-1&catalogId=10053&productId=204062250

The garage is brick outside, stick 2x4 construction from 1972. It has r11 in the walls, the ceiling will have r49ish when I get done with it. The garage is pretty air tight thanks to the previous owner. The slab is uninsulated.

The garages primary purpose is for a printshop. I run alot of old printing equipment(letterpress). There is still enough room to work on the mustang when needed.

I want to get opinions on the unit I posted above. I need to space the stay conditioned year round. Will a 24K unit be enough?

Thanks

Probably, based on my somewhat larger garage, also with a 2 ton unit, and with similar levels of insulation in the same general area.

But the brand is a question. Why not get the Mitsubishi one that HD sells? That's a proven unit that is used everywhere, and parts and service are likely to be easier.

I will have to check out the Mitsubishi ones, they don't list them online for whatever reason. I am sticking with HD right now, mainly because my remodeling loan for the house is through them.

If the doors are well insulated that's likely more than you'll need to condition that space. How high are the ceilings? For comparison, I've got a 24K unit in a similar garage with 11 ft ceilings. One shared wall with the house, 3 exposed with 2x4 walls. Some insulation above but not likely more than R13 (finished unconditioned storage space above, I haven't opened the ceiling or floor to see what's there). On the cooling side, it's overkill, but the unit dials itself down and maintains the space comfortably. On the heating side, it does fine down to single digits. When trying to raise the temperature, it will run full tilt, but when maintaining temperature, it rarely needs that extra capacity. I suspect an 18K would have worked without issue, but I wanted that extra capacity because I only heat it from time to time, so raising the temperature will be more difficult. Doesn't sound like you are concerned about that since you'll be maintaining temps?

I would be concerned about obtaining parts for it or getting it serviced if something goes wrong. You're not paying a bargain basement price for that one, and for almost the same money you could have a Mitsu unit. Something to thing about.

Should look at the mitisubishi FE models. 100% Heat output @ 5°. And 75% at -13°. About 100° air at -13 outdoors is best in the industry as of now.

Like sevenzeronova is saying, check the specs ! Not every min-split heat pump will work in cold weather. Some may even have a resistance heater.

The Mitsubishi Hyper Heating Inverter is one that does work in cold weather.

Operating range for the one posted in heating is 47° to 17°. 25k btus at 47 and 22k btus at 17. May work in lower outdoor temperature but capacity will drop significantly. This may require you go up in size to compensate.

I purchased my Pioneer unit from highseer.com, via amazon. Just got the system up and running today after having to replace a bad compressor. It is awesome!
9K BTU heat/air, 115v. Wired it straight to my circuit breaker using a 20 amp circuit.
Works amazingly well.

I have (4) Mitsubishi 9k BTU indoor fan coils for sale
They are new and in the box.
I am a mechanical contractor and these were bought for a job and never used.
Downsize is they are R-22 units and you would need a new outdoor condensing unit.
