I have a chance to pick up a couple of Mitsubishi Mini-Splits, one a two ton unit with one evap, and one two and a half ton unit with two evaps. They were removed from a strip mall and according to Mitsu, date back to 2008/2009. New line sets will be needed. I can get the units for a total of around $1500. What do you guys think? I am building a two-story 40 x 60 garage that I will use the lower level for a workshop, and I may (probably will) partition a 20 x 12 area for wood working, etc. The upper floor will not be heated or conditioned. All intelligent help appreciated.

1) Heat pumps or cooling only? (a lot of commercial applications are cooling-only, but it depends)
2) Wood working + mini-split = problems waiting to happen with particulate build up in the coils. Seriously consider a dust collector + regular coil cleaning on the mini-split.
3) profit?

Considering that new ductless mini-split kits start out for as little as $500 per ton at the low end, $1500 for a well used systems pluse dead line sets sound like no bargain to me. Maybe if they were free or a couple hundred bucks tops, considering the invested install work/cost for a well used system that may have hidden issues would be OK at best. A real pain to remove if worn out and contaminated.

While you may be right, it also seems like your logic is comparing apples to oranges.

Brand new 'low end' equipment vs. 5 year old 'top of the line' equipment.

Not to disparage whomever did the removal, but I would be concerned about exactly HOW they were removed from service & stored.

Finally, a voice of wisdom! Yes, if you had the opportunity to observe, inspect, and test these systems in operation, then perhaps you could have made an objective decision and charge a big discount for removal. But even if that were true, you would still be far better off buying the relabled new Mitsubishi unites posted above.

Man I'm pretty:)

Not to be a Debbie downer, but I wouldn't be buying any used hvac equipment. Not only do you not know how it was removed, what about how it was maintained for it's previous service life? If you are going to have to buy accessories (lineset, cables, power cords, etc) then just buy new and get a good peace of mind.
