Hey Guys,

Just looking for thoughts on cooling/heating this garage. Total floor space is about 1900sqft. 30x30 section has 9'4" ceilings,2x4 walls with R15 insulation and 2x10 ceiling/floor with r19 insulation. 20x50 sections has 18' ceilings, 2x6 walls with r19 insulation, r38 insulation in ceiling. The garage is in southeastern Virginia. It is shaded majority of the time. The garage stays pretty cool inside even when its in the 90's, it will stay between 75-80 degrees during the day if i keep the doors closed. Problem is during the summer with the humidity, it will start to condensate pretty bad in the garage especially if a garage door is opened. During the coldest part of the winter the garage will maintain 50+ degrees. Ultimately I would like to control the humidity during the summer and keep it comfortable in the garage during both winter and summer. My thoughts are to start with one mini split in the 30x30 section and see how it goes. If I need to add another in the 20x50 section I can. Should I try to start with 1 36k BTU in the 30x30 or maybe a 24k unit and plan on putting a second 24k unit in the 20x50 section if necessary? Pictures attached for reference. Thanks

You (or an HVAC contractor) can calculate how much heating and cooling you need, instead of guessing. The good thing about mini splits is that they're inverters. They won't short cycle like traditional HVAC if they're over sized.

Loadcalc.net has a simplified manual J calculation. Be sure to check out all the fields and fill them out if they are appropriate- it's easy to miss one and get a different result.
