All,

I'm in the middle of a build... I'm planning on a unit heater, but have the opportunity to buy a used mini split for about $250... I was thinking of buying and installing it, primarily for cooling, but I'm wondering is 9000 BTU 3/4 ton is even big enough to do anything? MY garage is 32 x 28 x9 in Wisconsin.

Any input?

I use an 8K to cool my 12x24x8 workroom. I would have nothing smaller in there -0 had a 5K, no go. I have a 10.5 that works in the 24x26x8 area but it's minimal for "cooling" Cool is maybe mid 80s. It should be a 12K. For your 9K, I'd say "no" - not in that large a space.

I think 9k is going to be a too small for 900sq ft. The high ceilings probably don't hurt you for cooling. Your local climate, insulation, orientation to the west, number of doors, windows, etc all go into the equation.

Go to www.ecomfort.com and submit all your info as honestly as possible and let them calculate the heat and cooling loads for you. It's a free service and is very professional. With no more than you have stated, I would say no to a 9k for cooling that space.
