Hi, I called a HVAC company listed on the Mitsubishi Mr. Slim site for an estimate to install a mini split system with heat pump into my old rowhouse. The house is under 1,000 sq feet, 2 floors to be cooled/heated, 2 bds, and an open floor plan on the first floor. He quoted me $12,300 for 3-ton m-series36,000 btu system with 3 air handlers. Absolutely insane. I was thinking about 1/2 of that. Has anyone had a similar system installed and could you share the ballpark?

Don where are you located for that price I'll put 3 mini split systems in if your close enough and fill your fridge with beer ( cheap beer ) but beer

That sounds to high of a price. But depends how things are ran are the units going to be on inside or out side walls how much power and where will they get power for the unit etc. but its still to high of a price

Residential cooling can easily be $2000 - $4000 per ton. You don't mention if there is any demolition required. Will there be complications running piping? Do you have existing electrical capacity or do they have to do a heavy-up of the service? In historic houses everything costs more.
What you should do is ask for a cost breakdown of the bid and see for yourself what the Contractor has planned.

I don't think it's fair for the contractor without giving any detail on what was planned for the install.
It looks like you will have a zoned system with one condenser and 3 air-handlers?
Get a competetive quote for the same system from a second or third contractor.

I agree get at least 3 quotes but I still say that price is nuts unless you live some where around Jersey and in that case everything there seems to be waaaaaaaaaay overpriced . I tell all my customers to get 2 other quotes then call me . I will do my best to compete with any other bid as long as its similar equipment and they are dealing with an actual licensed and insured contractor. My price on an LG system compareable with the MR slim you are looking at even at a 55% markup would only be $10,000.00 and thats with a 55% markup my actual normal markup is 35-40% even at 40% its still only $8335.00 so get some more estimates . These things are not that hard to put in and its not rocket science .
