Whats the decision factor for determining to go with a mini split VS a central AC unit in your garage?

Pros/ Cons to both

For nearly everyone, I bet the deciding factor is cost.

Ducting is expensive and needs to be done right. Anyone can throw a mini on the wall and it will usually work OK since they are typically inverters and can throttle back to deal with oversizing.

They also don't tend to last as long and can be difficult to clean

Space is a concern also. Conventional condensing units are quite large compared to mini-split condensers. Air handlers and ducting are large as well. How large is this space. How tall the ceilings? How much attic access? The mini-s are typically quite a bit higher efficiency. I recently spoke with the fellow who bought my MA home and the mini I installed there is 21 yrs old and running perfectly. Yes, they are a pitn to clean, but you can learn how to do it and it is a once every year or two job other than cleaning the filters. With the exception of being able to add high MERV rated air filtration I see no benefits to ducted system. I have a JDS ambient air filter box n my garage that handles filtration there. Personally, I’m done with ductwork and will only use mini-splits.

Not necessarily, Mike. Depends upon the space. More outlets certainly than the mini, but likely single stage as well. In an open floor plan with the modulating fan on the mini the temp would stay more even. Single stage gear runs on a perfect sine wave. The mini will hit a temp and modulate to satisfy temp.
