Mismarked desco tap

The tap says 3/8 24 but is really 3/8 16. I needed to tap a 3/8 24 hole and not paying attention to thread grabbed it because it said 3/8 24. Luckily it was in a piece of scrap I was just screwing around with but now I know check tap with bolt before using. Anyone else had something like this happen? The tap in the tap handle is an actual 3/8 24
Sure am glad I didn't use the mismarked one to tap a hole on an engine or something important. People with a lot of experience would have noticed it sure but I don't yet

Luckily you used a piece of scrap and noticed that it was too coarse a thread. That is scary, I could see a very expensive part being wrecked had you not checked.

Good learning experience for me just reading this. I have always just blindly trusted the markings on a cap or die, i will be checking with a nut or bolt from now on as well.

This is why I always grab matches but on tap even thou it is marked correct thread pitch

Luckily you used a piece of scrap and noticed that it was too coarse a thread. That is scary, I could see a very expensive part being wrecked had you not checked.

Scary part was, I was threading a hole in scrap to put an old bolt from my engine in because I was just bored as heck waiting for mom to get home so I could replace her differential gasket. Few bolts on my engine are 3/8 24 which was what I was putting in scrap. So thankful I didn't try to fix a thread

I looked up Desco and under their label is every type of product so clearly they are just a marketer of other people's stuff. I saw a whole set of taps and dies for a low price that could not be anything but a cheap Chinese import. It looks like the same inexpensive stuff that HF and Grizzly sell. It is not surprising that a tap was mismarked. The next problem is whether it will break off in the work. Use plenty of lube and go slow.

I worked a hardware store years ago. Donald E. Savard Co. was the distributor that sold us US made Hanson taps & dies. The story at the time is that a guy from a local store asked the Hanson rep at a show why Hanson didn't have "Made in USA" on all their tools anymore. If the story is correct Savard was caught selling imports as Hanson & lost the Hanson distributorship. Their name was mud.

About that time DESCO tools started showing up & we thought it was done to look like a different company to avoid the previous bad press. My boss didn't buy their stuff after that. He was angry. Finding crazy problems isn't a surprise. Made in USA?

Very interesting. I will definitely make a note to avoid that brand. It is one I was not familiar with.

DESCO USA might be the full name of the company. If so, they can legitimately mark imported tools with DESCO USA.

There was a post earlier this year about a hanson tap marked with the wrong TPI.

In the late 60's I messed up a job by using a mis-marked 5-48 instead of a 5-40. The weak acid etch made the 8 look like 0 and the supplier misread as well. Package said 5-40 and the tap LOOKED like it was marked 5-40.
But still, my fault.
Reminds me of the time I pressed in a 1/4 dowel pin and cracked the die block.
Then realized that I had grabbed a mis-stored +.002 oversize dowel pin.
Again, my fault.
After the oversize pin fiasco, the boss asked me a simple question that stayed with me for over 40 more years in the shop. I can't stress this enough.

"DIDN'T YOU CHECK IT?"

Take NOTHING for granted.
