How important is it to match the same brands of the air handler and condenser? My rental unit has a 2 ton Goodman system that was installed 9 years ago and the condenser needs to be replaced. The air handler is still good. Have a contractor who I normally use and said he can get Goodman or Ruud. Said the Ruud would be $400 cheaper if I didn't care about them matching brands.

As long as all the specs are the same, and it meets the air handler requirements, it doesn't matter what brand of condenser you put in. They have basically the same motors, wire, electronics and other items in them.

There are only a few places in the world that make these things, and they make them for all the major brand names.

What he said, the air handler doesn't care what brand of compressor pumped the refrigerant.

The tonnage has to be the same and if the evap coil has a expansion valve it would offer the best performance.

Is the old air handler an R410a system?

You won't get an AHRI match with a mismatched system.

As long as it's the same tonnage, same refrigerant and heat pump or straight cool.
It's a rental.
I do it all the time.

It's a little bit more than just tossing them in -- there are tables.

I'm surprised the Goodman is not the cheapest ...... ??

Also -- 9 years ago Goodman was low end stuff. You may be replacing the air handler sooner vs later
