Ad reads.....

For sale: One rare Fairchild model 950 4.5" bench grinder. It still spins up when powered but the cord needs to be replaced and the bulb in the center and bulb housing are missing. It would make a good restoration project, it has an aluminum deco-style case which would look great anodized.

Ad has been on CL for a week, I sent him an email tonight saying 'd take it and he replied that someone had called him an hour before me and was coming by in the morning - I told him I'd come tonight! - but he said he'd already made the commitment.

Now the kicker.............................$10!

I had one of those and used it for years before it croaked permanently (Blew out the switch and replaced it once). Small and very easily dragged down. This is a VERY light duty grinder for VERY light passes. I'd class it for hobby room or jewelry use, not a lot going for it for in a garage.

I'd certainly not pay more than 10 for it, 5 would be more in line...

Since the wheels are so small I thought I'd make a sharpener out of it, for chisels and such...........I just thought it was cool looking, as long as it worked - for $10 I really couldn't care if it worked well.

I have a 6" and an 8" bench grinder already, so it's not like I needed it - I just liked the way it looked....

I agree about it being cool looking I just wanted you to know it's limitations.

If you are talking wood chisels, get an old belt drive and add a jack shaft to slow it down. sharp angle cutters like those are too easy to burn up on a high speed grinder.
