I saw an ad on CL for an old Craftsman floor drill press, the vintage kind we all love, for $50 just a few towns away from me. It looked to be in very good condition AND had the Vari-Slo or whatever it's called speed attachment and pulley. The price was a paltry $50. The ad had been posted two hours earlier.

I told the guy I'd take it, but he got back to me this afternoon and said it was spoken for way before my message arrived.

What great deals have you just missed lately?

More often I just have people who never get back to me. Someone will post something with no information and I'll ask a simple question like a model number or size or whatever, and I see them repost it every two days but they never respond to me. There's a guy with a grinder here that I've emailed for a model number or picture like 6 times and he's even messaged me back, but just tells me he'll look at it later or he's been busy, etc. He still reposts it religiously.

Didn't get it because I have no use for it but now realise I probably could've done with some of tools with it.

My most recent was last month. A SnapOn top box KRA61 that I won (and paid for) on an online estate sale for $85. The day before I was supposed to pick it up, I got a call from the broker telling me that the seller was refusing to honor the sale and that the entire auction was cancelled. All told, I had spent $200 and had to wait 4 days for the refund.

Flash forward a month to this past friday, I see on CL that there is an estate sale at the same address as the p/u site from the online sale. So I go down there to see if the toolbox was still there. I was #6 through the door. All the top dollar tools from the previous listing were gone, including my box. Only the dregs were left. Four of the other people in front of me were also buyers from the previous auction. We were all Pi**ed.






P.S. - before someone chimes in with "bang his wife", I saw her as they were leaving ......... brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!

I think most of the great deals I've missed are ones I didn't get a chance to see b/c the ad was posted and taken down between times I've been on CL.

I did have a great deal made on a Snap On top chest recently, then the guy turned around and sold it to someone else after he made the deal with me. I had planned on picking it up that evening. Sometimes, a person's word doesn't mean sh/t.

Some of these ads are "feelers". If a lot of people want it at that price they bump the price up or bump the price and sell it elsewhere.

Mac side cabinet for $20 and only a couple miles away. Called and told the guy I would be over to get in half an hour, has says fine, then calls me as I am going out the door and says its sold.

Almost the same thing. Mine would have been $80, 1960s vintage drill press. It was in my Dad's town, couldn't light a big enough fire under his **** to go pick it up for me. If it was in my town, I would have nailed four $20s to the guy's door and had my truck backed up to his shop at 6 am the next morning. Lol.

Could have used it this week...grrr.

once an old man down the road from me was selling his old f-150 for $500, running condition. I called him up and asked if I could come look at it as soon as he had time and he said how about 8 o' clock, when I get back from visiting my mother in the nursing home. I said sounds good.

I showed up at 7:55 and there he was handing the title to some young punk. Sad day.

I suppose he probably thought the punk was the guy that called for 8 o'clock.

I've missed out on a free Toro snowblower that just needed a friction disc, 2 free sets of O-A tanks, and plenty of other stuff. Ya gotta love the Kijiji Free Stuff section when you're strapped for cash.

Yeah I called a guy about a Record made in England wood vise for $20 and we even made arangments to meet up and he called me shortly before we were suppose to meet and he's like well there was this other guy that actually emailed me first and I felt like he should have first dibbs so I sold it to him. What horse s#!* . I told him I will come out that night if I need to but he's like it's cool I'll hold it till tomorrow. Guess I should of went right then

Painful topic I think we have all been there. I just try to convince myself that it wasn't meant to be. Sometimes that is pretty easy to do other times not so much.

Yes, but there are also seriously interested buyers that actually have a life/commitment/job/prior engagement or what have you that they can't just drop everything on the spot and go run for a Craigslist deal. Many a times, craigslist like garage sales is a game for the retired, unemployed, self employed or those that work odd hours.

Lots of folks, which is becoming more and more rampant on Craigslist and just in general life are lazy, spineless, arrogant weasels that don't have the stones to say what they really feel. All about doing the least for the most mentality. Heck there a number of folks on here that do the same by specifically not answering questions or giving someone the brushoff. If you don't want to answer the question, fine but at least have the stones to say that.

Trust me, I totally get that. But when a price and time are specified and a deal is made, then he sells it to someone else, that's breaking his word. He could've told me, check with me when you get off work and if I still have it, I'll hold it for you. He didn't do that, he agreed to the selling price and the time I told him I could come get it.

That's why, when I'm selling something, if I'm not willing to hold it, whether it be a few hours, day, whatever, I don't tell the buyer it will be there when he comes for it. I tell him if I still have it, he's welcome to come look at it.

When someone pulls that sh/t as a seller, they have no right to complain about buyers that do the same thing.

A Snap-on bottom cabinet with the roll up door, not sure of the model number but it had the older style nameplate and the door was red and not the brushed aluminum like later models. Decent shape and sold at the auction I was at for 50 bucks. Was loading stuff in my pickup and when I came back they just hammered it sold. Me was pissed.
