Well, I bought a 5600k 240v heater. Dr Infared is the make.. To put it short, it kinda *****. Today is was almost 30 outside and I barely reached 50 inside. the heater was on from about 7am till 12N. Am I asking too much? The walls are insulated, but the ceiling is not. I just finished it. I do plan to lay some insulation up there. The garage is roughly 400 sqft. The propane heater I was using got that garage to about 65 in about hour and a half...only thing, the fumes kinda gave me a bit of a headache. lol
I've already run a 240V outlet, so I want to run electric....what do you guys suggest?? thx!

Heat rises. Insulate the ceiling and you should definitely notice a difference. Insulated your doors too, if they are not already.

I have a 20x22 garage (440 sqft) and opted for Fahrenheat 7500w heater. Right now, the garage is NOT insulated, only the doors are. If it was only 30 outside, the heater would maintain 60 with it on low. That's using the full 7500W. I have R15 for the walls and R21 for the ceiling in the garage, waiting to be installed. I really hope to be able to run the heater at 5000W or lower to maintain 60 even in the cold of winter once it's insulated.

The 5600 watt heater "should" (with other factors involved) heat your space if properly insulated. Do you have a ceiling in place or just open attic space?

the fumes kinda gave me a bit of a headache. lol

It's called CO poisoning and it can kill you.:lol_hitti

that's why I got the electric heater brutha!! lol:beer: Nuff snow for ya?!?
the space above the garage is all open. It needs to be insulated. I "do" have a ceiling fan.....yesterday it was 49degrees in my garage with the fan "on in winter switch setting" I will lay some insulation down and see what happens

thx for the input!!

see....now that is the kinda of performance I was looking for...If the heater were on full, it could heat the garage easily. It just would never shut off because the the non insulated walls.. Once you insulate, then heat would go up and the electric bill would go down. I think maybe I will start looking for a fahrenheat... Thanks mang!!

Depends on WHERE you are at . . . . an unusual dip in temp for Florida or extreme S Texas into 30's instead of normal 70's, then yeah completely normal you don't feel like electric heater is doing much since you have no ceiling or insulation whatsoever. ;)

Update GJ Profile with City/State/Country.

Get some rolls of thick mill plastic and staple them up to ceiling rafters for makeshift seal. Overlap the seams and tape them as well. This will give you closed upper "air envelope" once plastic is taped to the walls.

You'll see huge difference in effectiveness of your heater !! :D

Mine is 4000W. That is 13,652BTU's and it will heat my 1700sf shop -- it is obviously running a lot. Built with SIP's and conventional well insulated.

You need to insulate and seal up air infiltration

I agree Heat Rises... so the heat is going Straight Up... Also how High is the Ceiling ?? How Tall are your Walls ?? 8' 10' 12' ??

figure how many Cubic Feet you have as well... But that SHOULD heat it IF INSULATED !!

Also How many BTU was the Propane ?!? mine is 35-55k
my 5000w is ONLY 17065 BTU Approx 1/2 of my propane on IDLE !! 1/3 Wide Open !!

5,600,000 Btu isn't enough?? :lol_hitti

Tommy

Lol....that was 5,600,000 watts, not BTU's :)

Electric heaters are ****. You're much better off replacing your gas unit with something that is running correctly. Oh, and if you have any sort of gas equipment you NEED to have a CO detector in the space with you. I'd suggest getting one with a display so you can see if you even start building any CO at all.
