The miter saw thread reminded me that I want to figure out a better dust collection solution for the miter saw at the makerspace. Why is it so hard to get people to clean up their messes?

Anyway, I've looked at a lot of things people have done including the shopnation thing. Those that work tend to hug the cut closely. Great for flat, wide cuts. Not so great for a saw that gets used for all kinds of stuff. Says easy to remove when necessary, but that means it'll get removed and not reinstalled. Then lost.

My thought is a giant funnel behind the saw with a screen/mesh to stop parts and chunks from getting sucked in. Cleanout at the bottom for stuff that does. Need to move a not of air to pull all the dust in.

Could this work? Why wouldn't it work?

This is a standard system actually used in some areas.
You would need to attach it to a regular dust collection system though for necessary air flow volume from my understanding.
Makita actually manufactures an attachment like this, although without the screen, for the portable dust collector they no longer sell in the USA.
