Miter saw side extensions lower than table?

Is it normal for the side extensions on a miter saw to be slightly lower than the table. I've attached a picture showing what I'm talking about. The box arrived looking like it had been through 3 wars. Everything checks out though, other than this and some cosmetic damage to the belt housing cover.

Usually it's the other way around.

anything in the manual to show an adjustment? not that you should have to adjust out of the box tho...

It looks like this aspect is not adjustable at all.

I would return the saw, it will never cut true.

Interesting that this would make it not cut true. I was thinking it might be intentional to keep lumber from pinching the blade, but I guess not.
