Looking for a mitering head bandsaw in the $500 to $1000 range. Looking at jet 414457, Baileigh BS-128, Boulton BS-128, Grizzle G9742, Or one from Northern Tool. Anyone have one of these and want to share? Any other suggestions? I know everyone recommends the Ellis 1600 and I agree but it is just out of the question even for a used one. Thanks

I too wanted an Ellis 1600. I was fortunate to find a beat Ellis 1200 for less money than shipping and taxes would have cost for a new one.

It doesn’t have quite the capacity I’d like but I still have my non mitering 12x9” import.

Here it is today.

They are all basically the same machine. If you get one I would say go for the cheapest available, likely the Grizzly. I have had the Northern Tool version for several years now. For what it costs, it’s not that bad. I don’t think Northern still sells them though.

It cut pretty square out of the box once I installed a die master 2 blade on it, little adjusting and it suits my needs.

Not long after buying it though I had the threaded holes in the base that hold the vise down strip out on two of the four holes and the vise nut would slip rather than tighten. I used a clamp instead. These two issues had me disgusted with it after using it for several years that way.

I ended up buying a used Ellis 2000, not realizing how big it was. Honestly, after owning one, it dosent make me a sandwich like most others claim it will. It’s a fine saw, but not the heartthrob others claim imo.

After getting the Ellis I fixed up the Northern unit by installing heli-coils in the casting and adding a set screw to the vice that keeps the vise nut engaged all the time. After doing this I started using the Northern saw more than the Ellis.

This is tool forum blasphemy, but I now plan on selling the Ellis and holding onto the Northern unit, at least until I can find a good deal on a hyd mech dm8. The Ellis I have is bigger than I need and not as easy to use as the smaller saw.

If I can’t find a decent dm8 or dm6 I might just grab a Grizzly 613 or 614, which is a knock off of the hyd mech style.

Nuff said...Trick Tools has a variety of saws you should look at.

Those are nice units, made in Italy right? They run over $2k I think.

I will say a mitering saw in general is a game changer. Import, Ellis, HEM, Hyd Mech...all will be much more useful than a fixed 90 degree saw. I would encourage the OP to step up to the best unit he can find/within budget and make sure it has a good blade.

Another thing to point out is blade speed and coolant. Look out for blade speed, some such as the griz single phase unit only run at a relatively high blade speed. This is fine for structural’s, but if you need to cut higher grade steels the ability to slow down the blade and ad coolant help considerably.

Thanks for the replies. Sure wish there was somewhere around here to go and put my hands on any of these machines. The Jet looks different than the other 4 which look almost the same. Wondering if it is worth $200 more than the others?
I won't use the saw enough to ever justify a used Ellis but I also am not willing to pour much money into something that becomes scrap once the first part breaks.
All I am looking for is an accurate set up to make 45 degree cuts in 2x2 tubing. My Milwaukee abrasive saw is not it, my Milwaukee deep cut portable band saw is not working out either. I spend way to much time grinding to get a good fitting joint with the tools I now have. I am open to other suggestions if anyone has any.
lis2323 I sure do like your set up. Almost looks to nice to use.

Tell me more about your HEM saw. What makes them worth the money? Does it cut accurate? I looked at their site and the videos looked good. The lower end ones would be at the top of my budget. I had not looked at had not looked at these before Thanks.

I have the Grizzly G9742 and I love it. Once you put a good blade on it and set it up properly it has impressively accurate cuts. You can also use it in the vertical position very easily...not sure why they don't advertise that as a feature.

I caught it on sale and shipped to my door with lift gate was $738

Tarmy you sold me on HEM. Space is a premium and I hope one of these is the answer. I am placing am order from Trick Tools this afternoon. Hope I find a good used Ellis one of these days for a stationary unit.

Don't sleep on Dake, Kysor or Johnson bandsaws, nor any Wellsaw. Also WF Wells is a different concoction than its close namesake but good. Startrite makes a good bandsaw as well as an old DoAll. There are probably many others that escape me.

Case in point. I hemmed and hawed on a Hyd-Mech S20 for over a month. Clean, completely gone over and came with a dozen new blades.

Timing was a bit off as I had JUST finished refurbing my little Ellis 1200.

It finally sold and I don’t know if I was relieved or sad [emoji23]
