I recently picked up a set of these handy little 4" calipers. However, they're missing the glass crystal that protects the dial. Does anybody here have a good source for parts? A good USED parts source would be even better!

Mechanical calipers need cleaning and oiling peridocally. I would suggest that since they have been without a cover on the dial that you send them into someone like long island indicator to be serviced and repaired if you want a tool that can be relied on for accuracy.

It will cost you more to ship them to Long Island repair than they are worth let alone the cost of the repair. They are not all that expensive in the first place.

Rule number one. Never buy a tool that is damaged or missing anything and never buy a set of anything that has pieces missing. It will cost you more to fill in the set than buying a full set. IF they are cheap buy them and sell them individually. You will make enough money to buy a full set.

Just sell the tool and buy a complete one. Check the prices of repair, dial against a new one and you will see that I am right.

I cleaned and oiled them. They work great as is, and I've been using them. I just thought I'd put a lens on it to protect the dial from damage. A new lens will run me $15 shipped from Long Island Indicator. They're shut down for January, so I figured that gave me an opportunity to explore other avenues.

Go to the following link:

It will give you the part number and price and why you must replace the bezel and crystal as an assembly. L.I. indicator service ships quick by first class mail. Great people to deal with.

Yeah, I've dealt with them before. I was just looking for other options since they're shut down for two more weeks.

The 4" come in very handy. Unfortunately I had a pair that was stolen out of my box when I was off work. I do have a 6" pair of Mitutoyo's that also need a new lens. I've never heard of the lens and bezel having to be put in together though. Years ago, I could buy spare lens off of the tool truck.

Bungy....if you work for a factory that does machining, Check with them and see where they send off a lot of their equipment to be calibrated and repaired.

I placed an order with them last night, I am slightly confused about what this shutdown is. It said for spare parts, but I ordered a new dial test indicator. I have emailed them to confirm, this information should be given out prior to placing an order. Sorry to hijack.

Here is what's on their "contact us" page:

"Important notice: there will be no spare parts shipments during the month of January. You are still welcome to place orders, which will then be shipped in February."
